The case of Mrs. Beale against the
P. M R Company, and the Gallaher
Wiight case awakened an intense inter
est among the wh ile people of Mifflin
and vicinity. Usually Court proceedings
are little thought of aud cared for by toe
fcm.le portion of the community. These

its deep sympathy for the unfortunate

Wright, was quickened to its deepest

We do not know that any one of the
ladies who graced the Court and honored
the parties in the cases enumerated by
their presence, in the least degree, favor
the woman's rights moveinen. yet if
Mrs. Anthony or Lucy Stone could have :

aher. This was an indictment chargiog
defendants with stealing twenty-three
U. S 5 20 Bond, of the denomination
f 1.000 each, am muting in all to the
sum of ?3.000 ; also with receiving
said Bonds from person or persons un
known, knowing them to have been sto
len This, owing to the age and former
high character of the parlies, was the
most interesting trial of the week. Much
sympathy was manifested for the defend
ants. '1 he jury foul id them not guilty,
hut that they pay all the costs. The
I titer part of the verdict, being illegal
was suppressed y the Court We for
i.ear further comment, as a civil suit, we
are informed, is pending against the de
fendants to recover the value of the
bonds alleged lo have beeu stolen.

counted by Doty, Parker & Co.; the
second, for forging a note of Si, 100, t'is
counted by E. S. Poty. The defendant

years in the Western Penitentiary.

The Dimo rut says : John Wolfkeil, of
'Iranville, had- his pocket book taken,
which contained $14 , John Ilooley, of
Kichacoquillas Valley, his, containing
?240 ; and another individual, whose
name we did not learn, lost $75.... Fos
ter M. Henry, of New Lancaster, in this
county, was in town to stdl a load of
shingles He sold the shingles and got
drunk. In the evening he went to
lieedsville nn. I at night aa late as 10
o'clock was at the Camp Meeting, but
still drunk. Toward midnight he pro
ceeded homeward alone Arriving at
llie lime kiln on Fred Schrader's prop
erty, a short distauce above Honey
Creek station, he found the kiln was
firtd, and llie top layers just comfortably
warmi Thinking, (no doubt,) that this
would be a comfortable place to stay for
the night, he lay, dowu over the heated
kiln to sleep, little knowing that the sul
phurous or carbonic fumes escaping
would inevitably make his sleep the sleep
of death. But, it was so. In the morn
ing lie was found there, dead ! Esq
John Swarlzell was notified and with a
jury of twelve citizens held an inquest
over the remains, which resulted in the
very just verdict, Died from suffocation.''
Mr. Ileojy was about 50 years of age.
and had no family, but lived alone in a
woodman's cabin. He bad about his
person, when found, 76 cents in money
and two bottles of what had doubtless
been sold to him as whirky. but which
was really drug poison !... .The .S''
nel says : Cloyd May made a narrow
escape from being crushed, between the
lender and cars of the Sunday's camp
meeting excursion train at Milroy, where,
he was adjusting the hose leading from
the tank, the engine was backed up and
he was thus caught, and is now suffering
from a broken collar bone and other
bruises. . . . Willie, aged about four years,
son of Jacob Steidle, was drowned on
Saturday afternoon in the river about a
mile and a half below town, lie bad
gone iu the skiff, against, it is said, llie
remonstrance of Lis mother, with his
father, to spend Sunday with Kaler,
the tenant of the McClure tract below

months and 29 days.
The deceased was the father of ten chil
dren, tho gran Ifat her of forty grandchildren,
and the great grandchildren of fifty five
crcnt gran (children making in all one nun-
lreu and five uescendants. lie was an es
teemed citizen of Pfouli's Valley, and w.n
engaged in preaching the go pel to tbe Men-
onite congregation lor the period of furty-
two years. His lunerul services were con
ducted by I'evs. Isaac Barton, J. K. Snyder.
