John T. Morgan, while working at

Cuyahoga coal shaft near Providence, in
Luzerne county, last Saturday, made a
most remarkable escape from a horrible
death, Having occasion to walk across
the mouth of the shaft, one of the planks
covering it broke, and he was precipitat
ed to the bottom, a distance of 1S3 feet
Some men working near the foot of the
shaft heatd a cry and proceeding to the
spot found him in about two and a half
feet of water, and to their amnz meut
Morgan related to them how the plank
had broken 183 feet above and he had
fallen down. Not a bone was broken,
and, except a lightly sprained ankle and
a little bruise on the chest, he wag unin
jured. He wore a pair of wide oil cloth
pants, tight around the waiet, and two
oil cloth coats, buttoned close at the neck
The theory advanced is that the air in-fi-itcd
his wide clothes, and his desent was

BE it enacted, and it is hereby enacted by
the authority of Ibe Town Council of
the Borough of Thamp-oniown, that from
and after Ihe nineteenth (IS) day of August.
A. D. 1872, it shill be unlawful for any swine
10 run at large within the limits of the Bor
ough of Th.mpontown under penally of
seizure andsale within twenty four (24) hiurs
afier such seimre, or the payment of a fine
of one dollar ($1 00) by Ibe owner or owners
of such swine, for each swine, for 'each of
fence the proceeds of such sale or fine to be
appropriated to the benefit of the borough,
aforesaid.

general opinion that no formal announce
ment was necesnary, but, -learning that sev
eral persons, more tenaitive stickers for
forns of law thin consistency, assert that he
has not been regularly prented for the mf
frages of the P.cpuhlicans of Juniata, in
order to satisfy their most fastidious scru
ples we now present him. He has filled the
office for two terms with honesty, and tare
ability, and is the choice of nine tenths of
Ihe party in the district for re-election.
Three out of the five counties, Union, Sny
der and Northumberl.in i, have already unan
imously declared for hint, and Dauphin, on
the 20th of August, will most certainly do
the same, leaving only our little county re
maining. Undor such circumstances any
factious opposition to his unanimous renom
inate n is not only futile but reprehensible,
and we think that it is the duty of every Re
publican in Juniata to sake his nomination

Slate Constitution should be men of charac
ter, industry and ah lily, so that they enn

erition of the Convention, and so thaf tbey
can assist in moulding a new fundamental
law that shall be in harmony with the spirit
of reform that is abroad in the land. I know
of no one in our county who is better quali
fied for these requirements than our young
friend, Jeremiah Lyons, of our town, and I

date for Delegate to the ('institutional Con
