J FARM AND HOUSEHOLD. " ' - ' MIXES. I noticed with much interest the article iu jour Farmer'a column apon the sub ject of Male, bat I cannot agree with tbo neeertion "that thore having Mares of fine blood, speed and symmetry, should breed horses, but from common mares breed Males." Now I claim that from Wares ot fine blood, symmetry, &e , yon can raise a Mule of greater value, and realize more money in less time, than fiocs hone colts. Some Farmers will not breed mules on any terms ; but those wbo wish to I urn stock in money, in the abwtest time possible, can do no better Oban tarn their nlte ution to ruising Mules. la Keatneky. where they breed mules iu great numbers, it ia do uncommon thing to get from one hundred dollars and np wards for a Srgt clas male at one year old. But horse c1uj you nint kep three and (our years and thro hare hard work to get one hundred dollar for them. Tueti couut the cost in these times of scarcity, and high prices fir hay and grain, and you will find they hare cort you double or more than yon elm get for them. Whereas mules will lie and thrive on the coarsest food, pre ferring weeds, briers, door grass, straw and all comee fodder, leaving you for eale the timothy and best hay. Mule breeders never feed grain nolil they be gin to wotk them, which makes a very great paving. All farmers know tbat horse colts will not tlnive unless fed lib erally with grain and with great care and much attention, while mules can be r.rdily tinned to money in one or two years, at tbe largest profit with very little trouble I am surprised that the farmers of Adams comity don't pay more attention to mule breeding. Look ing over the U. 3. Statistics of 1870 I find the number of horees waa 8. 243 000, average price SSI ; number of innles 1. 179.000, average price $109 ; making the average value of mules $23 above the horse in the Unit-d States. Get tyi'urg Slr Ir Stnfinct. How to Catch Bats. Ouc of the pests of the farmer is rats To keep them within endurable bounds is somewhat a difficult task, for a rat is as enrning as a fox, and as hard to catch ; hut there is snch a thing as working strategy on it. A rat never digs a hole unless it has some protection to begin with, say a stone, a stick of wood, or anything else tbat makes an an gle with the gtound ; a cellar wall it likes best. If a rat is c baaed in a cellar or oilier room, it will run round the wall, aud is dec derlly averse to leaving it 1'rnm thin habit we have a hint how to outgeneral it 1 he common eteel trap is tbe Lest article for the purpose. Stand box or barrel, or either article, within f ur inches of the wall, and in that open pace c't a trap, wiihout anything to l.iJe it. ' Tbe rat iu following tbe wall will get into t lie trap rather than go arouud the barrel. When it is caught, smoke the trap with a piece of burning paper, rliift your barrel to another pWe and rt-t the tiap as before. It is raid tbat if a man hides where crows frequent, and they sec hiro go there, they will stay away until they see him leave. If two meu hide and one h aves, the crows will go back to the one that is left ; and this is because a crow cannot count. Thus with the rat ; there is sonw'tliing in tin; cotiiliiti.itioii of the wall, the tiap and the barrel that itd ies not soem to understand. Cv' German- foien Tcleyraph. -- An ExrtRiMt.NT is Fkkpiwi llott- sKs The London Otnuibu Company tmc six tbnusaud horses. To economize in feed is an important matter, and has led to several tests, the result of which is recorded, as fallows : To each of three thousand of their horses they gave a daily allow nnce nf ground oats sixteen j pounds, ground hay seven and one half pounds, and cut straw one and one-eighth ponnHs the bay and straw being cut j into pieces about half an inch long, and j well mixed up with oats in a little water, i and so making twenty-six pounds of food for each horse. And toeai h of the other three thousand horses they gave a daily allowance of whole or uubiuUed oats nineteen pounds, and uncut or whole hay and straw thirteen pound, without any waterj in our old fashioned way, making thirty two pounds of tbis food for each hoise. And what was the re sult I Why it was soon discovered that tbe horse which was fed on the twenty six pounds of ground oats remained in as good condition, and could perform as much work, and do just as well, too, as the horse did which consumed thirty-two pounds of food as aforesaid, thus show ing a saving of six pounds of food per day in favor of bruised oats and cut bay and straw, which, if valued at five cents per horse per day, amounted to a saving of the neat little sum of 5300 per day.
