out of place, the rail spread, and engine,
tender and a box car filled with corn were
precipitated down a twenty-feet embank

Fell isto a Weil. Tim Altoona
Triluue says : On Monday afternoon last
a boy named William Suckling, who was
: assisting to build a wall in East Altoona,
was piocuuug water. lor me purpose 01
making mortar, from a well near by and
011 the property of a woman named Mrs
1 arsons. hue endeavorine to draw
a bucket of water the boy let the bucket
slip out of his bands and it fell down
Into the well. When the well was sunk
some time since, the water came into
so rapidly that it was found impossible
to wall it np, consequently a number of
pieces of timber were nntilized to prevent
the well from caving in.
These pieces of timber render a de
scent into the well a very easy mattter
and when the boy let the bncket fall Ik
began to make preparations to go down-
after it, but being discovered by Mrs
Parsons she inquired what was wrong
Being informed that the bucket dropped
down into the well and that he was
eninff down after it, Mrs Parsons re
plied that she would go d own and get
it. saying that she bad often been down
in the well and that it would be no
trouble to her. She began her descent
down the ominous looking hole, but bad
made very little progress when a piece
of timber ou which she was standjng
gave way and she was precipitated down
into the water, a distance of twenty
three feet
There ij also about eight foet of water
in the well, but Mrs Parsons Lad sunk
twice and npon coming to the surface
of the water the second time the rope
was let down and she was called to take
hold of it. She succeeded in getting
hold of the rope, and by this time
another boy had arrived at the well
when the two boys endeavored to draw
her up out of the well by turning the
windlass while she was holding by the
end of the rope The boys were making
good time with their part of the arrange
ment. Sirs. Parsons was unable to bold
on to the rope and again fell i;to tbe
water. Again tbe rope was let down;
and arin Mrs. P. took bold of it.
Mr. Wd. Leader, who was working
in close proximity, was made aware of
the fearful situation of Mrs. P. and at
once made baste to procure a ladder
which Le put down into the well, and
by tbe aid ot which be succeeded in
landing the unfortunate woman sale on
U-rrii firma It was a miraculous escape
from drowning, as Mrs. P. was com
pelled to bold by the rope for at least a
half hour while efforts were being made
to get ber out of the well. Immediately
after she was rescued the woman fainted
but was speedily restored to consciousness.
