While man is placed upon earth to de
velop and enj y its resources, Lc also
finds it necessary to employ Lis facul
ties to secure the means "of protection
against the element, by which be is sur
rounded heat, colds, winds, water, light
uing, etc. Even yet he is not jierfecily
secure against these, and it is but recent
ly that progress lias been made toward
protection against the terrific element
that playg with vivid flashes between
the earth and the thuuder cloud, so often
shattering trees, burning dwellings, aud
instantly destroying life. Science has
however completely mastered it ; not
only compelling it to bear our messages
along the wires from state to state, aud
from continent to continent, but so di
rects it as it leaps from tho bosom of the
storm, as to render man and his dwell
ing perfectly safe
A good lightning rod properly attach
ed to his house will just as certainly
protect man against lightning, as a good
roof will protect him from descending
rain : and it is just as wi.-e to secure
protection in one case as iu tho other.
The relative conducting power of met
als is es follows :
Silver, 100; Copper, 92; Gold, 65;
Zinc, 24; Tin, 14 Iron, 12; Lead, 8 ;
PI itina, 7.
Silver conducts electricity more per
fectly than any other metal, but its cost
renders its use impracticable. The next
best conductor is copper, which is not
much inferior to silver, and which on
account f its cheapnetj, durability, and
freedom from oxidation, is at ouce th
me:al for this purpose. Its conducting
capacity is over six times that of iron.
hence its great superiority to that metal.
It is asserted by some that it is not
right to put up a lightning rod, as ii
shows a lck of confidence iu the Crea
tor, ar interferes with His designs I If
his is true, it must be wrong to guard
airniost the other elements of nature, lie
ends the heat, the redd, rain; also.
poverty, sickness and death. hat
right have we to protect ourselves from
hem by the erection of comfortable
1 welling?, or to thwart llis plans by in
dustry, by taking mdicine , or using
means to prolong our lives? What
right have we to take the lives of ani
mals, or even to uproot plants of II is

proposition is concct, we ought to lay
aside our reason, and make no effoit to
avail ourselves of the biessings, or avoid
he dangers that surrounded us.
Again, does it show a lack of cond
uct ? Where are we told to exercise
aith without works ? llow can we ej
ect to attain a certain end wit'iout us-
ng mean ? No truth is more plainly
aught in the bible, or mire in , accor-
lance with nason and our practical ex-
peiience than this ; if we would reap a

f we wou'd enjy temporal blessings or
ope for spiritual salvation, we must cm
Joy the means which God hath oidnin-
d, looking to Him in humble trust and
confidence to bb-ss our labors.
Again, some persons appear to think
hat a rod will protect an unlimited sur
face Accordingly on their barn, per-
apg sixty to ninety feet in length, they
place a single rod and poiut, sometimos
in the centre, at others at one end, or
perchance, en a pole near the buil ling

the lightning to its work of destruction.
Pbe same with their dwellings. There
ay be a d. ten chimneys pinnacles and
gables, any one of which U liable to re
ceive the lightning, jet nothing would
induce them to have more than one rod
placed on the building. It is almost in
credible, that any person who can read
or posses ses poweis of observation,
should entertain opinions so utterly at
variance wiih fact- and common senee,
and in direct opposition to the unani
mous testimony of those who have de
voted thfir lives to the investigation of
electrical science.
"It is all well enough to rod barns,
hut houses do not need them 1 ' It is
true barns are in special danger juat
titer being filled with crops, yet take
the whole year, and it is a fact well
known, not near as many are struck as
houses And further, 'tis in bouses we
live ; tbey contain our families and dear
est treasures on earth ! No man can
estimate the damage . which might be
done. It is importaut to protect barns,
but far, far more to regard the afety of
the inmates of our dwellings. What is a
few dollars in comparison ?
Prof Henry, Secretary of the Smith
sonian Institute, says no damage can en
sue to a building protected by a light
ning rod, however many discharges may
fall upon it. A good copper rod by its
powerful induction, diminishes the in
tensity of the lower part of the cloud,
and therefore diminishes the number of
explosive discharges, but if a discbarge
takes place from the cloud, due from any
cause whatever, it will be attracted from
a given distance around the rod. and
transmitted harmlessly to the earth.
The efficiency of lightning conductors
does not depend so much upon their
power to attract the lightuing, as upon
the power of a point to draw away, in
sensibly very powerful charges of elec
tricity from the electrified cloud, thus
preventing the disruptive discharge.
We frequently hear persons say "I
was cheated once in purchasing a light
ning rod, therefore I will never get
another "
Persons have been cheated in burin
horses, do tbey go afoot the rest of their
lives iu consequence ?
A telegraph wire may fail so may a
rod. this only proves that the cause of
the failure is with the material used or
the construction has been imperfect. A
continued connection is the best cop
per is the best condnctor and where we
find these two combined we. naturally
conclude that such a rod is the best
lightning conductor.

Farewell, vain world, I'm going home,
My Savior smiles and bids me come ;
Bright angels beckon,tiie away.
To sing God's prais; in endless day.
I'm gUd that I was born to die.
From grief and woe my soul shall fly ;
Bright angels shall convey me home,
Away to new Jerusalem.
And when to that bright world I fly,
And join the anthems in the sky,
O, then my happy soul shall tell
My Jesus has done all things well.
I hope to meet my brethren there.
