FARM AND IIOUSEIMLD.
ODE OF IIABVESTINU WHEAT IX CAL
Wheat is sometimes cut dowo with
( reaper and bound into sheave ; bnt more
. generally it u headed. I be latter pro
cess it the cheapest one, bnt can not be
followed when the crop ia extremely
heavy aod lying on the ground. In
heading, the machine ru's the emp and
pause it iuto a wa jon. It :a then hauieJ
off to a convenient position, and piled
up unbound in a h'-.p, wlirre it awaits
the arrival of the thresher Whether
reaped or leaded, it is unnecessary to go
to any exi-.-e in protecting it irom tlie
weather. If the farmer nieuus to sell it
oon after being threshed, he hs no need
to haul it to his granery. Afer the
ibrt ehing if over, iromcni-e piles of sacks
can be sor-n lj ing for months in the open
field. . They are perfectly afe ; they
are nev?r stolen and never injured by the
weather. Aecoapaning the header there
are usually fie ion, three wagons, and
twelve horses. The men and horses are
hired by the owner of the header, but
boarded by the owner of the h''at. A
good header will cut about eighteen acres
lxilv ; for which a price, varying from
51 50 to 52 per ncre, is pnirl. The far
ther must a!no keep a man to stack the
wheat costing $2 more daily. Aseumitig
t'e price paid to the owner of the header
to be ?1 75 per acre, hii whole outlay
would be $"9 50 or f 2.20 per acre. Out
of this (39 50. the owner of the header
r'ci ives ?3l 50. IJis expenses are ; one
man to attend the header, ?4 per day;
four more men nt SI 50 each per day,
mid twrlve hordes at 2") cents each, if he
I as to hire thm making, in all, ?13,
Mid leaving a daily prof t of $13.50
'J best figures also apply to rich land that
3-ielJs twenty or twenty five sacks to the
i.cie. Must of the wheat is now threshed
by steam A steam macbiuq will aver
ige about eight hundred sacks of oue
bumped pound each daily. The price
p:iid to tie owner of the machine may be
set dowu at eight cunt per sack. With
the machine are four men and six horses
which are to be fed by the farmer. Be
cides these, there will be fifteen more
men required, and these the farmer must
feed and pay. As the work is hard, em
ployment at this season easily obtained
they received S2 per day and board.
M'ood for the engine costs the farmer S6
per day, making in all Sill 50, or aboul
I I cents per sack. After deducting his
expenses, the owner of the thrasher will
clear about $40 per day. Ilis machinery
costs about $2 500 ; but, as he gets about
sixly days work during the threshing
season, the machine nearly pays for itself
in oue year. It will be seen from these
figures that the farraiT can get his crops
harvested at a small expense ; and at the
same time, if he has money to iuvest in
machinery, he can obtain good interest
on his outlay. From " IVayrt an I Ad
vantage of California," in the OVER
LAND loTHI.Yur April.
Garkks Walks. As mauy persons
have at this time large heaps of coal
Mrhes. they cau dispose of them in no
way to better advantage than by haul
ing them into tin ir garden alleys. Re
move f rom four to six inches of dirt, and,
having screened the ashes, or eeperatod
the core and cii.ders, first apply the
coarse stuff, then oyster (hells, if you
have any o:i hand, email stones, glaas or
pieces of backs and t'p dress with the
ash.'s. Roll it, and you will have one
of the best wilks ever seen in a garden
The a-hes become very hard, and are
never wet, winter or sum njr, if the wea
ther gives the water the least chance to
get away. In summer, in five minutes
fter a shower there will be scarcely
enough moisture to dampen the soles of
your shoes.
Soft soap kok tuk Ladies. Mrs.
Randolph, the author of the "Virgiuia
i louse Wife," gives the following mode
of preparing a cosmetic soap for washing
the hands : Tuke a pound of catilo or
any other nice old soup, scrape it into
Muail pieces aud put it on the fire with a
little water ; stir it till it becomes a
miooth paste, pour it iuto a bowl, aud
when cold add some lavender water or
i sconce of any kind, beat it with a spoon
until well mixed, thicken it with corn-
meal and keep it in pots closely covered.
'J his is very nice and good.
... . .
To Clarifv Coftee. A piece of
cod-fish skin the size of a penny washed
thoroughly and dropped iu the bailing
coffee will make it perfectly clear and re
quires less boiling than when egg is used
A very economical way of settling coffee
with eggs is to brown a pound at once;
immediately on taking it from the oven
break on the hot coffee oue egg, stir rap
idly until every kernel becomes moist
ened with the egg, the heat of the coffee
will soon dry it, when it is ready for use.
A Correspondent tells how ho saved a
fine peach tree, and gntbered bushels of
fruit : "Every peach, for years, seemed
as if stung by some insect; and though
it bloomed well in the spiing, the num
ber of peaches was small. I dug a trench
around the trunk of the tree and filled it
with bard wood ashes, and covered them
with the earth removed. Then the tree
loaded with fine fruit, "much of which
came to perfection, though we gathered
much green to relieve the tree.
A cow owned by a resident of Addi

sequence of eating straw that had been
taken out of a bed which had been slept

died of diphtheria. She had every symp
