The (Joimlry (iinleman gives the
following remedy for painful wounds :
Take a pau or shovel with burning coals
nnd sprinkle them with common brown
caiu, nuj lji,l-l ttic wouuded part in the
smoke. Iu a few, minutes the pain will
be allayed and recovery proceeds rapidly.
J u my own case a lusty nail had made a
bad wound in the bottom of my foot.
The pain and nervous irritation was se
vere. This was all removed by holding
it in the smoke for fifteen minutes, and I
was able to resume my reading in com
fort. We have often recommended it to
others with like results Last week one
of my men had a finger nail torn out by
a pair of ice tongs. It became very
painful aa was to have been expected
Held in sugar smoke for twenty minutes,
the pain ceased, and it promises speedy
recovery.
What Washington knew about farm
ing was worth knowing. In 17S7 be
had five bnndrsd and eighty acres in
grass; sowed six hundred bushels of oats j
teven hundred acres of wheat, and as
much more in corn, barley, potatoes,
beans, peas, Slc, and one hundred and
fifty with turnips. , II is stock consisted
of one hundred and forty horses ; one
hundred and twelve cows ; two hundred
and thirty-six working oxen, heifers, and
steers, and five hundred sheep. He
constantly employed two bundled and
fifty hands, and kept twenty-four plows
going dming the whole year, when the
earth and the state of Hie weather would
permit. In 1780 be slaughtered one hun
dred aud fifty hogs for the, use of his own
family, and provisions for his negroes.
Articles of silver offered, as wedding
presents have been voted, not exactly vul.
gar, but uncultivated - and unrefined
Instead of these works of art, statutes and
paiutings, something, about which a sen
timent can be eutwined, are henceforth
to be the things to proffer to the newly
wedded.
