tion be ordered the break to be put on,
the strap thrown off, and the wheel re
vet sed. Tbe orders obeyed he extricated
himself fiom bis perilous situation, took
hold of bis lacerated arm, compressed the
arteries as well as possible and went into
the house. Meeting Mrs. Woodward he
prrcautioncd ber against excitement,
told her to keep calm and bring some
bandages, ''I have cnt my arm off.' She
ejaculated "Oh 1 Jobn," and proceeded
at once to get the bandages and while the
blood from the torn arteries was thrown
ten or twelve feet at ever pulsation, she
put compresses on the arm above the el
bow and while be caught an artery that
was still bleeding freely, she twisted a
silk string and tied it, be holding it out
with his thumb and finger.
Such resolution, presence of mind and
indomitable firmness - in both man and
wife, under such appalling circumstances,
are not often witnessed. Such firm as
well as intelligent conduct on the part of
a lady under such circumstances deserves
all praise, and favorable mention should
also be made of the presence of mind,
heroism and courage of Mr. Woodward.
He sat in a chair holding his arm un
til Drs. Dorworth and n-nsyl arrived,
who were anxious to render every assist
ance in the line of their profession that
was needed. They deemed it prudent
to await the arrival of Dr. Dobbins, of
this place, who bad been sent for, and
when be arrived they proceeded at once
to amputate the bruised limb. Tbe sur
gical part is said to have been very skill
full r performed. Mr. Woodward, we
are glad lo state is getting along a well
as could be expected.-
