The residences of James Alexander
and T. G. Bell, of Midi in county, were

in the throat with a pistol, loaded with
shot, on the 12th iust ; but whether ac
cidentlly or designedly we do not know.

was destroyed by fire, on Thursday af
ternoon, the 23d itat. The barn con

wagon to Mifflin, and was accompanied
by a daughter about 8 years of age In

horses took fright at a pile of snow that

Two Milroy boys made a deer lick
near Milroy. They watched from be

Grand Reunion. The soldiers of
the 126th Regiment, Pennsylvania vol
unteers, will hold their Second Annual
Reunion iu the New Town Hall, Geeen
castle, on Wednesday, 13ih of Decem
ber, 1S71. The exercises will be of a
most important character, and a very
large and interesting meeting is confi
dently expected. The members of the
Regiment -are respectfully invited to at

given His Excellency, John W. Geary,
Gen. E B. Tyler, and other officers who
participated with the Regiment in the
field, and who have signified their inten
tion to be present. It is hoped that all
the members of the Regiment will regard

Ox Saturday morning last, Mr. Joseph
Ilarpster, in company with Mr. Joseph
Slippey, both of Frankstowu township,
started off after a number of their sheep
that had strayed away. They crossed
Brush mountain near Widow Moore's in
to the Kittle, when, after feeding their
horses, and taking dinner, they proceeded
through Black Gap, along the foot of the
mountain, where they discovered some
of their sheep. They then drove to the
Frai.kstown and Altoona road, crossing
the end of Brush mouutain. In passing
up the wet-tern slope of the mountain,
riding along, one behind the other, talk
ing as usual, Slippey spoke to Ilarpster,
I and hearing no reply, he looked back and
found Ilarpster lyiug on the ground he
having fallen off his horse to the right

Kdccation: The Fifth Annual Ses
sion of the Juniata Couuty Teachers'
Institute, will be held at the Court
House, Miffliutown, commencing Mon
day, December, 18th, at 2 o'clock p.
m., aud closing Friday evening, Dc
lembcr 22d, 1871. All teachers of
both public and private schools, aud
all persons intending to become tca
chers'are invited to become members,
and avail themselves of the advan
tages thus offered. Ministers, school
directors and friends of education are,
also, cordially invited to attend the In
stitute. Prof. W. N. Hull, of Pitts
burgh, will be present the entire week,
and will give class-drills iu Elocution,
Reading, English Grammar, Methods
of Spelling, and Penmanship. Prof.
Hull will also give two entertainments
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings,
consisting of Popular Readings and
Lectures. His Readings and Lectur
es are highly entertaining and instruc
tive. Miss Flora T. Parsons, a grad
uate of the Oswego Normal aud Train
ing School, will be present during the
week, and will give instruction in Pri
mary Methods, Object Lessons, Map
Drawing, Inventive Drawing, Prima
ry Reading.itc. Prof. Henry Houck,
of the School Department, will be
present on Wednesdiiy.Deccraber 20th.
He will lecture on different subjects
relating to school affairs, and will give
any information ou points of law that
may be desired, during the day and
evening. This will be Directors' Day,
aud the following subjects will be dis
cussed by school directors and others :
1st. What should be the size and
locatiou of our school buildiugs T 2d.
Should teachers' salaries be uniform ?
If not, what should be the basis of
thcir grading ? experience and success
iu teaching; size of school ; grade of
certificate, or all combined. I sincere
ly hope that as many of the school
directors of the county will be present
on that day as can possibly make it
suit Prof. Silas Wright, of the Jun
iata Valley Normal School, will be
present on Monday aud Tuesday, and
will give instruction in Methods of
Teaching Geography and History.
Prof. Stone and Patterson, of Tusca
rora Academy, and Prof. Geo. F. Mc
Farland, of Harrisburg, w ill be pres
ent part of the week, and will give
iustruction iu Methods of Teaching
Arithmetic, and Theory and Practice
of Teaching. Miscellaneous, Subjects
ou various and important educational
topics have been assigned to a number
of leading teachers of the county.
Their Report and Essays will inter
sperse the proceedings during the week.
The committee to whom the duty was
assigned of preparing and furnishing
music for the Institute is expected to
come prepared for that purpose. A
committee of five on Permanent Cer
tificates will be elected on Monday
afternoon. Teachers immediately on
their arrival in the "borough on Mon
day will report and have their names
enrolled. According to the Act of As
sembly under which this . Institute is
held, the roll of members must be
called at least twice a day. The roll
will be called morning and afternoon,
a tecord kept of the attendance, and
at the close of the Institute published
in the county papers. Those who are
tardy must report to the Secretary at
recess. Last "year 93 of the 103 teach
ers who were engaged at the time
in teaching were present This" was
creditable, but there is still room for
improvement. As this is the last ses
sion of the Institute at which it will
be my privilege and duty to preside, I
do most earnestly desire that every
teacher in the county will be present,
not only part of the time, but the en
tire week. Teachers, you can only re
ceive the full benefit of the instruc
tions that will be given by being pres
ent at all the sessions. Some counties
have already had every teacher iu
them present at their County Institute,
and I feel assured that the teachers of
this county are not willing to be behind
arty of their sister counties in attend
ance at their Institute. All teachers
who feel the responsibility they have
assumed, and who desire to be consid
ered earnest and lire teachers, will
most assuredly come up to this our
annual re-union, that they may be
come the better qualified for their re
sponsible position. I do hope that I
will be spared the unpleasant duty this
year of giving any teacher a lower
mark iu the Practice of Teaching, as
the law directs, for neglect of attend
ance at the Institute, than they other
wise would have merited. I here agaiu
repeat that I do sincerely hope that
every Board of School Directors iu
the county will encourage their teach
ers to attend the Institute -by giving
them the time, or at least a part of it
and thus promote the cause of educa
tion. Arrangements have been made
at the hotels for the accontmodation
of teachers at $1.00 per day. Every
effort will be made to make the Insti
tute as practical, interesting and use
ful as possible. The names of Lec
turers and Instructors need no recom
mendation, they should be sufficient to
warrant a full attendance of teachers
the entire week,
