A. r I, -Hi ' r. ' ! : 9 31 - 5 r ! 3 i 'i FARM JflB HOUSEHOLD. "7? FlEXKBS AS LEGISLATORS. 44 . - lt A southern agricultural club bas been debating tbe question whether it would cot be wide policy for farmer to support farmen and mechanics as representatives in the legislature. This is a subject which we would like to have discussed in other than South'ini Club. The interests nf agri ulture are so im mense and are so viully connected with the welfare and prosperity of the whole country, that it is a matter of great sur prise so liltln att-titiou has been jrivea it hy nor law makers penfrally. The im pression appears to prevail largi-ly amongst farmers tliat their interests and tbe interests of the community at large ean Vest besubsi-rvcd ty srnding lawyers and other professional nion to the legisla ture. In compliance with this ide a, com piua'.ively few farmers are selected, and as a natural result, agriculture bas come to le regarded as a matter of secondary importance, so far as legislation is con- j cernt-d. j it in proper mat a certain numoer ot i able lawyers ebould be sent to tbe legis lature, but it is proper al-o that the farm ing inter.-iit shall be largely represented. The fact that we have not had more of this class in our legislative halls, is dne mainly to tbe prevailing impression that farmers ere not educated for the purpose. Tn.6 is an error. If the cultivators of tbe soil will forage these political pre ferences, and select from their own class I men of intelligence, ripe experience, and snprior judgment and there are plenty f fcuch in every county in the State they will soon find that tbe claims of tbeir proftospion will be properly respect ed I-av-yers are theatrical ; farmers are practical, and it is tbe engrafting of more of tbe practical into our legislation that is now demanded. This will never be done until farmers properly estimate their own importance, aud tbe importance of! agriculture. The sooner, therefore, that tbe cultiva tors of the soil take tbe position that they re, by virtue of numbers aDd in the the magnitude of tbe interests involved in agriculture, entitled to a full and fair share of legislative representation, the better it will be for all parties. Let them agree to send as representatives men of known practical ability aud thorough in tegrity, and they can accomplish it with out tbe kat difficulty. Another good rtsult that would be cer tain to (ullow such a course, would be the driving out from our legislative halls the political charlatans who have do in terests to subserve but their own, or those of the party to which they belong Farmers, as a general thing, are Lonest ; at least they are, taken as a whole, more honest thau professional politicians, and more capr.ble of determining what legis lation is best adapted to promote the gen eral welfare and prosperity. 'vYe bope to see this matter taken up and dirensaed in tbe North, as it is being done in tbe oulh. Nothing but good can come from it, even if they do not determine to send men of their own class to assist in making laws. The fact of tbeir moving iu the matter at all will compel the politicians to select better men for these important positions than they have been doing for some years past. EJia'e.
