    ncisraTs or ths plague at
BCOOS A IKES,
n m
T6e tmifcle plague, which bas Leen
prevailing at Bnenoa Ay res for some
time, at pears to be abating. It is the
opinion of the American Consul that not
less than 30 000 perished, and still, at
tha latest dates, the carniral of death had
not eeased, thoagh the deaths daily were
considerably diminished. Bat fourteen
Americana have fallen victims. A cor
respondent of the New York Herald
gfoi the following :
The most extraordinary tales are now
being narrated by eye-witnesses of the
scenes related, and continually fiudicg
their way to the public prints, and may
one day form a ghastly "literature of the
plague." Among those current are the
following half-down incidents which have
cone the rounds of the press, most of
tbem being voncbed for, bnt forming only
specimen rases from among the thonsacds
that have occurred :
In March last a confectioner broke open
bis coffin while being carried to the South
Cemetery, and, feeling faint, weak and
bombed, turned icto a neighboring ytl
peria lor a glass of brandy. After
drinking it be said to the jjulptro, " I
cannot pay you, as 1 have no money ; I
have juet broke ontof my coffin." Every
occupant of the house fled as though a
fury was pursuing them. A street mes
senger, carrying an empty coffin on his
bead, enters a grog-shop, and putting the
coffin on the counter, drinks till be falls
to the floor, and is carried away with the
coffin. An cngiue driver on tbe North
ern Bailway line was lying in agony on
bis bed. Suddenly he starts np and
rashes from the bonse a maniac. He
meets a fellow-workman, and tells Lira,
" I am going to catch my train." His
comrade tock Mm to Lis bonse, but be
died two hours after reaching it. In the
touetnldlat, a class of poor alleyway ten
ement houses, the mortality was dreadful,
and as many as seventy dead bodies are
reported to bave been taken from one of
these fever dene, and the scavenger carts
were employed in tbe removal of the
corpses, sontetin.es actually breaking
down from tbe weight. At one time cof
fins were publicly lawkert or peddled
about tbe streets, and later the Popular
Commission distributed them gratuitously
to the poor. One day a man came up
and apkcd (or a coffin from tbe Commis
sion to bury a dead relative. Tbe burial
case was furnished, and two days later
be appeared and atted for a coffin for the
same person as the first one asked for.
It finally turned out that be had, with
some acquaintances, been indulging in a
drunken spree, leaving the relative nn
buried. At last one of the acquaintan
ces died of fever, and his body was
promptly pnt into a coffin ; "and now,"
said be, "we are going to bury both to
gether." In the baste cf flight from the city
many Louses were abandoned, with all
their cont'-nfs, and at once the thieves set
up a profitable buHuess by watching
their opportunities and carting away all
tie furniture and other (Sects. This has
occurred in scores of instances, and the
police now hold large number of keys of
abandoned dt-liiiijrs. During Holy
"Week, which terminated April 9, the
plegne reached its extreme violence, and
it was e.t that time (hat coffins, or rather
simjle boxes, were peddled in tbe streets.
At this time also tLe new cemetery at
the Cbacarita was opened, and the work
men who were employed as grave diggers
actually pursued their ghastly calling by
tbe light of lanterns far into the night,
being unable to inter the bodies as fast as
they arrived during the day. It may in
terest many persons also to learn that
among these grave diggers and mortuary
laborers there was a smaller ratio of
deaths than among any ether class of
people.

AX OLD SI0ET W0BTH REPEATING.
An old story contains a lesson which
many married couples have not yet learn
cd. When Jonathan Trumbull was Gov
ernor of Connecticut a gentleman called
at bis house one day requesting a private
interview. He said : " I bave called on
a very unpleasant errand, ir, and want
your advice. My wife and I do not live
happily together, and I am thinking of
getting a divorce. What do yon advise,
Sir r
Tbe Governor tat a few momenta in
thought ; then turning to his visitor, said,
"How did you treat Mrs. W when
yon were courting her I and how did you
feel toward her at tbe time of your mar
riageT"
Squire W replied, - I treated her
as kindly as I could, for I loved ber
dearly at that time."
Well, Sir," said the Governor, " go
home and court her just as you did then,
and love her as when you married her.
Do this in the fear of God for one year,
and then tell me the result."
The Governor then said, "Let ns pray."
They bowed in prayer and separated.
When a year had passed away Squire
W called again to see the Governor
and said : " I bave called to thank you
for the good advice you gave me, and to
te!! you that my wife and I are as happy
as rhen first we were married. I cannot
be grateful enough for your good connfeel.'
" 1 am glad to bear it, Mr. W ,"'
said tbe Governor, "and I hope you will
eontiuue to court jour wife as long as
you live."

GROVER & BAKER'S
SEWING MACHINE
The following are selected from thou
sands of testimonials of similar character,
as expressing tbe reasons for the prefer
ence for the Geovbb & Baker Machiaes
over all others.
' I like tbe Grover A Baker Machine, in
the first place, because, if I bad sny other, I
should still want a Grover A Baker, and, hav
ing a Grover A Baker, itanswers tbe purpose
of all the rest. It does a greater variety of
work and it is easier to learn than any other.
Jfrs. J. C. Croly Jenny June
" I have had eevui al years' experience with
a Grover A Baker Machine, which has given
me great satisfaction. 1 think the urover a
Baker Machine is more easily managed, and
less liable to get out of order. 1 prefer the
Grover A Baker, decidedly. "-Jfr. Dr. Watts,
Aew lork.
' I have had one in my family for some two
years, and from what I know of its workings.
and irom toe testimony 01 many or my
friends who use the same, I can hardly see
how anything oould be more complete or give
belter satisfaction. Mrs General Grant.
" I believe it to be the best, ail thingt con
eidered, ot any tnat i nave known. It is
very simple and easily. learned ; tbe sewing
from the ordinary spools is a great advan
tags ; the stitch is entirely reliable ; it does
ornamental work beautifully ; it is not liable
to get out of order." Jfrs. A.M. Spooner, 36
Bond Street, Brooklyn.
" I am acquainted with tbe work of the
principal machines; and I prefer the Grov
A Baker to them all, beenuse I consider the
stitch more eUstie. I have work now in the
house which was done nine years ago, which
is still good." Mrs. Dr. McCready, No. 43
East Twenty third Street, Aew York.
More than two-tnirds 01 all the sewing
done in my fairily fir the last two years has
been done by Grover A Baker's Machine, and
I never had a garment rip or need mending.
except those rents which frolicsome boys will
make in whole cloth. It is in my opinion by
far the mist valuable of any 1 have tried.
