The poor wretches get it on their feet, and over their fur, theu they lick it, and don't like the taste'of it ; it burns them sumewhnt, auJ the mure they'see of it the less tbey like it ; eo they clear out almost as soon as the application is maJe. Ssveral days ago Mr James Deyarmeigh of Bloody Run, undertook to clean out and fix up a well on the property of .Jacob Baruhart, Esp., lately purchased from the U'atsou heirs. The well is 55 feet deep and has not been used for twenty-five or thirty years. Before going down the well, Deyarmeigh fastened a rop? around his body, with instructions to those above to draw him up at a given signal. He went dowu the first time, and finding the carbouiu acid too strong for his constitu tion, gave the signal and was drawn np in a state of unconsciousness, in which lie lingered ualt an nour. J.ecoverinr from this, he went down a second time, aud was drawn up with like effects, only severer. Recovering from this, he con cluded, against his friends' wishes, to go dowu again as he .said, for his tool. Mr. Coieman's sale of the Patterson House furniture, required, Fri day, Saturday, Saturday evening, and part of Monday, to d is pose of all' of the articles for sale, The attendance was large, and the bidding by limes quite lively. The Setitiuel' local was present awhile on Friday afternoon, and thinks that the most noteworthy purchase during Lis presence, was the purchase of an "oil painting" by E D- Paikcr, Esq. The painting represents that side of a barn, into which hay, grain, and so forth, is hauled, two large doors are plainly seen, one of which etaids wide open, and reveals a mow, and a portion of tLe barn floor. The mow is well filled with grain and hay ; on the floor is grouped a party of three white young men. the one play ing avioliu. and the others deeply interes- ted in listening to the Biu.ie, judging from the expression of their faces. .Ou the outside of the barn, in a pensive atti tude, leaning against the closed barn door, :s a citizen of African descent, who evidently was on his way to or from work, for at his side on the ground lies an axe and water jug. but attracted by the dulcet tones of the violin, is seemingly as highly entranced by the music as are those with in. The purchase of this picture by so prominent a Democrat as Mr. Parker for a place in his collection of paintings, led to some remarks among bis Republican friends. If a package could be seen hanging from a joist above the barn floor, labeled U. S Bonds, we would interpret it t mean' ,nat picture was purchased wi,b "fkeepinp it as a me- mento uf the dead issues of the Demo- WCJf oppoBilion , fj. g. 3 and currency, and opposition to colored men.
