Efficacy of Onions A writer says : We are troubled ottcn with severe coughs, the result of colds of longstand ing, which may turn to consumption or premature death. Hard coughs cause sleepless nights by constant irritation in the throat, and a strong effort to throw off offensive matter from the lungs. The remedy I propose has been tried by me and recommended by me with good re sults, which is simply to take into the stomach before retiring for the night, a piece of raw onion, after chewing. The esculent in an uncooked state is very heating, aud collects water from the IU! , lungs aid throat, causing immediate re lief to the patient. A 15or Accidentally Shoots An other Buy. Last week Mr. Thomas Barnard, of Beale township, loaded sev eral chatnh rs of a gun, a sixteen shooter, for some purpose, but they were not discharged. He did not remove the loads from the chambers, and a day or two after, while from home, a sou about ) yetrs f ae got the gun and wae hand ling it in the tamily sitting room. A cham ber was accidentally discharged, the con tents of which, a half ounce ball, passed through the fleshy part of the thigh of a neighbor's son, about 16 years of age, who was in the room. It fortunately only proved to be a flesh wound. The bone was not touched. The ball lodged in the facing of a window. Dr. Sterrett was called and gave the wounded boy the proper attention Chalk. One of the solid men of Ju niata, "a sterling Republican," one of the "old guard," one who never flinches when the storm rages the fiercest, communi cates to us an item of news, not of a f political character, but t'le following : That " Mr. Joseph h. Kauflman, who owns a small farm on the top of Quigley's hill, less than one mile east of M'Alister ville, recently, in digging a well on his premises, when at the depth of SO feet. passVd through a bed of chalk seven feet in thickness, one layer of four inches of which was of as clear a white and as Cue a quality, and marks fully as well as that bought in the stores." He thinks that "perhaps exposure to the atmosphere may have a tendency to harden it." The same friend, some time ago, sent us an article on tobacco, which we have frequently seen since in our exchanges. Come again, eome often. Higuwav Robbery. Last Friday evening Mr. John Hosteller, of Johns town, this county, came to Patterson from Altoona, where he has latterly been working, on the 8:45 P M. train. He immediately started to walk home, which is at Johnstown, five miles upTuscarora Valley. When about a mile distant from PatUrson, on the road leading by Locust Grove School House, two men the one black and the other white stepped into the road and requested him to slop. He did so. The black fellow then presented a revolver to his breast aud ordered him to deliver his money to them. Uuder the circumstances he thought it best to do so. Hehauded them his pocket book. They " went through it," aud took out the money that was in i: ten dollars and some cents and then returned it to him. The black f. How was thrown off his guard while all this was going on. Mr. Uostetler, seeing this, sprang upon him with the object of wrenching the revolver from him. The black fellow fell into a gut ter at the side of the road, with Mr. Uos tetler on top. Seeing the white man coming to ti.e assietance of his burglar friend in the gutter. Hosteller sprang up and ran away. Three shots were fired at him as he ran, two of which passed throueh his hat When he reached home he found that his hands were quite black, aud he believes that they were so colored when struggling wiih the fellow in the gutter at the side of tha road, who, he believes, was a white man blackened We learn that diptheria is prevailing to a considerable extent in some portions of Fayette township. There's a formal kiss of fashion, Aud a burning kiss of passion ; And a father's kiss, A mother's kiss. And a sister's kiss to nerve. There's a traitor's kiss for gold, Like a serpent's clammy fold ; A first kUs, A stolen kiss. And the thrilling kiss of love, A mocking kiss, A maiden kiss, A kiss when fond heart sever ; But the saddest kiss, On earth is this A kiss to part forever. Too Poor. Moore of the Rural Xew Yorker, was silting in his office, one af ternoon some years ago, when a framer friend came in aud said : "Mr. Moore, I like your paper, but times are so hard 1 can not pay for it." "Is that so, friend Jones ? I'm very sorry to hear that you are so poor ; if you are so hard run 1 will give you my paper.'' "Oh, no ! I can't take it as a gift." "Well, then, let's see how we can fix it. You raise chickens, I believe." "Yes, a few. but they dou't bring any thing, hardly." ''lou't they ? Neither does my paper cost anything. Now I have a proposi tion to make to you. I will continue your paper, and when you go home you may select from your lot one chicken and ca 1 her mine. Take good care of her and bring to me the proceeds, wheth er in egrgs or in chickens, and wc will call it square." "All light, brother Moore ;" and the old man chuckled at what he thought a capital bargain. He kept the contract strictly, and at the end of the ear found that he had paid about lour prices for the paper. He often tells the joke on him self, aud says he never has h id the face to say he was too poor to take a paper since th it day.'' M dl farmer. Plblic Sales. WALT HAM WAT C HE S . The extensive use of these watches for the last fifteen years by Railway Conductors, Engineers and Expressman, the most exact ing of watch-wearers, bas thoroughly de monostrated the strength, steadiness, dura bility and accuracy of the Wailhim Watch To satisfy that class in all these respects, is to decide tha question as to the real value of these time-keepers. More than 500,000 of these watches are now speaking for themselves in the pockets of the people a proof and a guarantee of their superiority over all others. The superior organization and great extent of the Company's Works at Wall ham, enables them to produce watches at a price which renders competition futile and those who buy any other watch merely pay from 25 I 50 per cent, more for their watches than is necessary. These time-pieces combine every improve ment that a long experience has proved of real practical use. Having had the refusal of nearly every inveniion in watch making originating in this country or in Europe, only those were finally adopted which levere testing by the most skilful artisans in our works, and long use on the part of the public, demonstrated to be essential to correct and enduring time keeping. Among the many improvements we would particularize : Ihe invention and use of a centre pinion of peculiar conFtruction, to prevent damng lo the train by Ihe breakage of main-springs, is original with Ihe American Watch Com pany, who, having bad be refusal of all oth er contrivances, ad-pled Fogir's patent pin ion as being the best and faultless. Hardened and tempered hair-springs, now rniversally admitted by Watchmakr lo be Ihe best, are used in ait grades of Wall ham Watches. All Waltham Watches have dust proof caps, protecting the movement from dust, and lessening the necessity of Ihe frequent cleaning necessary in other watches. Our new patent stem-winder, or keyless watch is already a decided success, and a great improvement on any stem-winding waleb in the American market, and by far the cheapest watch of its quality now offere.i to Ihe public. To those living in portions of the United Slates where watchmakers do not abound, watches with the above mention ed improvements which tend la ensure ac curacy, cleanliness, durability and conveni ence, must prove invaluable.
