A Shocking Accident A Tioy
Criulud to Death bj the Wheel of a
Loaded Four-Iftrte Wugoa. Last Mon
day afternoon the snow melted rapidly
under the jdeasant sun. Water flowed
in considerable volume through the gut
ters or drains along the streets. Near
Patterson School House a number of
boys of that town were engaged in the
sport of damming a gutter to fulluess and
then tearing away the obstruction to see
the rush of water. Adam was comple
ted and broken down just as a four-horse
wagon loaded with a cord of wood came
along. ' A boy between the age of 7 and 8
years, a son of W. C. Laird, of Patter
son. was there, enjoying the sport and, to
escape the rush of water from the broken
dam, sprang aside, tripped and fell under
the passing wagon, one wheel of which
passed over his abdomen, injuring him so
fatally that he died within 20 minutes.
The people were greatly allocked by his
fearful accident, and Mr. and Mrs. Laird
have the sympathy of the whole communi

Concerning country newspapers the'
Cleveland -Tay,' writes :T "The. lncal
paper is an absolute necessity to the
county community where it is published
AH the city 'papers cannot mipply-tlie
place of the home paper. That should
be the first love of every ' man and wo
man, for with the paper is the locality
identified. The paper gives the county
aud town where printed much of their
importance in the world, and gives '" de
tail the local news which cannot be
gained by any other source Every day's
issue of the paper is so much local his
tory, and the rise, growth aud develop
ment of the town and county can be
measured and recorded only by the local
newspapers that constantly is gathering
its items. People do not properly ap
preciate their home newspaper. They
measure the value of a paper too much
hy the number of columns it contains.
The home paper at any-price is the
cheaper t paper one can take, for in it is

from no other source. . .T
Another thing to be taken 'into -consideration-
Eveiy county has one or more

MV Editor : Haviug . sceu a
notice iu the county papers of last week's
issue, that a trial of Myers A; McCaulley's
Band Cutter and Sheaf Conveyancer,
patented Jan. 31st, 1371, would take
place at the barn of S. C Myers, in Fay
ette township, on Friday, the 17th inst.,
I took occasion to attend fir the puipose
ot seeing whether the iuveu'ion posessed
any merit. When I arrived at the place
designated, to my great astonishment the
barn was crowded with mire than a hun
dred people, the Sepcrator with the im
provement attached in full motion, and
the Sheaves, a distance of about thirty
feet from the feeder, traveling up to him
with bands cut, as fast as he would re
move them. The gazing multitude look
ed with wonder and surprise, and as soon
as the Machine had stopped, there was
one spontaneous manifestation of approv
al and acknowledgment of the successful
operation of an invention of such . vast
moment, and one which bids fair to the
inventors. From one to three men are
saved in threshing with the Band' Cuttier
and Conveyancer attached, and the
sheaves are brought to the feeder in bet
ter shape than in the usual way. It
makes lio difference from what part of
the barn the sheaves are to be brought
as the Conveyancer is so arranged
that it can be readily attached to either
side of the machine, aud extended in any
desired direction from it, and bring them
from overhead as well as from the stack
if desired. No threshing machine ean
be complete without this improvement,
and the day cannot be far distant when
it will be universally attached to not only
all seperators, but all small threshers.
The following testimonial was signed by
nearly a hundred men who witnessed its
operation and saw it deliver the sheaves
to the feed from all directions, placing
them on the table with band cut : ;
We, the undersigned, citizens of J uni
ata county, having witnessed a trial of
Myers 3c McCaully's Combined Convey
ancer and Band Cutter, at the barn of
S. C. Myers, iu Fayette township, on
the 17th day February, 1S71, unhesita
tingly express our high appreciation of
so valuable an improvement to grain Sep
erators and threshing machines generally,
and the satisfactory manner in which it
performed what is claimed for it. Hav
ing seen it attached to a grain Seperator
and thoroughly tried, and with the aid of
one man bringing the sheaves from the
east end of the barn, and then from the
west, from the northside mow, and then
from the south, and lastly from Overhead,
with more precision and regularity, and
delivered on the table alongside of the
feeder with the band cut. than could
have, been done In the usual way by three
meni;.Ve can cheerfully recommend ;this
invention as a great labor saving machine,
an improvement of no little inportance,
and that it will perform all that the pat
entees claim for it. . , -. S ' r. .1.1
