JnnlaU Caaaty Teachers' Institute.
" Our court shall be a little academe."
So said Shakespeare's Ferdinand, King
of Navarre, to hia courtiers, Brion, Long
avill and Dumain. To live and atudy
and aee no ladies, they all agreed.
If it was not literally said by our
County Superintendent, G. W. Lloyd, to
the teachers of Juniata county, who as
sembled at the Court House, on Tuesday
morning, the 13th inst., that "Our Insti
tute shall be a little Academe" for teach
ers, in which the interchange of opinions
in teaching in every department of in
struction for youth should constitute the
lessons and lectures, it was so under
stood by the public. These Institutes
are little Academies" for the instruction
of teachers. No impolite edicts are
issued for the exclusion of ladies. The
days for such things have gone by. It
is no longer believed, like it was in the
days of Shakespeare's Ferdinand, that
the presence of I adieu exerted an influ
ence over the miud of the student unfa
vorable to his mental growth. The day
of woman's rights is here. She can enter
almost any place she chooses. Her pres
ence is no longer frowned upon, but it is
heaitily aked for almost ou every occa
sion. Aud the Institute of which we
write is a fair illustration of this fact.
On its roll of teachers, the names, as to
sex, stood 44 ladies against 77 gentlemen.
The organization of the Institute was
completed by electing Mr. Adam Wilt,
Vice President, and Messrs. Baum, Smith
and Brand', Secretaries The chief sub
jects considered during the two sessions,
forenoon and afternoon of this the first
day of the Institute, were '-Small Boys,"
"Grammar," "Tardiness," and " Geogra
phy." But the great feature of this
day's work is visible iu the evening ses
sion, in the lecture of " Qualification of
Teacher?," by Prof. Carver, of the
Bl.Himbburg State Normal School. The
house was crowded to hear this popular
educator. He has a way of serving out
a dry subject to his hearers that hides
all its hard and repulsive features, and
instead of causing thrm to wry their
faces and gag at it, they take it with a
smile. From his appearance and talk,
we would judge him to be the "right
man in the right place " 1 his lecture
stirred the community, and Wednesday
brought with it, as a consequence, in
creased interest in the Institute, on the
part of the community. The pt incipal
suljects considered by the Institute dur
ing. Wednesday forenoou were, "What is
the prcse it nntural development aud
order of time," Study and advance
ment," aud "Geography." At 3 o'clock
in the afternoon J. P. Wickersham, State
Superintendent of Pubic Schools, enter
ed the Court Room and was greeted with
applause. This being "directors' day."
and Mr Wickersham being called upon
for a speech, delivered o:ie, devoted to
the "powers and duties of directors.''
Iu the evening, after the opening of the
exercises, Mr. Wickersham delivered to
a crowded house, a lecture on "Our Com
mon School System, its designs, its na
ture, and the objections made to it." Its
design is ti make education universal
throughout the State in the elements of
knowledge in the branches named in the
law, to impart high kuowledge whenever
practicable, to elevate and improve so
ciety by imparting moral instuction. Its
nature is tLat it is "of the people, by
the pople, for the people," for the whole
people, irrespective of race or color, con
dition or sect. It is managed by the
people not by a central despotism as is
the school system of Prussia. It be
comes the people to make it good, ll
allowed to remain bad the people are re
sponsible. Objections were grouped un
der the head of taxes, social influence,
religious effects, &c. The lecture was
the most comprehensive one ever deliv
ered iu Miffliu oiutbc subject of "Com
mou Schools." Colonel McFailtnd fol
lowed in a lecture ou "Duty of Teacher
to Parent," at the conclusion of which
E D. Parker was called on for a speech.
He arose and said that as he was not a
teacher, only a director, he would make
a director' speech, and he related, in in
imitable style, his experience in the
school room as a director. He spoke of
the advancement, of the "common
schools" since his boyhood days and for
cibly illustrated the truth of his declar
ation by the commonest aud most hu
morous illustrations. This speech taken
all in all," and considering that it was
an impromptu one, was the best except
ing Mr. Wickersham's that was made
during the sitting of tiie Institute
The eubjects discussed during the fore
noon and afternoon sessions of 1 hursday
- Hiten Arithmetic." " How to
secure the approbation of the parent."
Exercises in reading, by Prof Shoe
maker. "Whither are we drifting educa
tionally?" "Science of education." The
evening exercises consisted of a lecture
hy Prof. Brooks, of Millersville State
Normal School, on the subject of the
"Culture of the Imagination." It was a
pleasing lecture, and was strung together
like pjarli on a silken cord. Also an
elocutionary entertainment by Prof. Shoe
maker. His comic readings, and comic
actings, aud drunken personation were
good." and highly appreciated ; but his
efforts at the pathetic reached only medi
rwritv. Hia delivery of Mark Anthony's
Oration over the body of Julius Cesar
would pass for a joke if Anthony were
living, but as be is dead, we presume it
was intended for a burlesque for the
pleasure of the audience. Mr. Shoe
maker's elocutionary entertainment was a
success, notwithstanding the slaughter of
ooor Mark Anthony.
The topics discussed on Friday were.
"Calling in,
"Devotion," "Calline; out,'
Recreation.' and Dismion. A large
number of teachers participated in the
discussion of these subjects. " Orthog
raphy" and " Penmanship," by Prof.
Shumaker. "How to teach reading," by
Prof. Shumaker. "Poe's Raven An
alyzed," by Prof. Shoemaker. "Orthog
raphy," by Prof. Wright.
Prof. Shumaker used the evening to
deliver his lecture on "How to say things."
Of course be said "hia things" very pret
tily, but not prettier than do many com
mon actors eay their " pretty things."
The large audience was highly pleased
with him.
"Object Teaching" was the subject of
a lecture for Prof. Wright on Saturday,
after which reports of committees were
handed in, aud the closing ceremonies
gone through with. E. S. Doty, Esq ,
addressed the Institute, at the close of
which it adjourned tine die.
The Institute was a success. Mifflin
is the place for it to hold its sessions an
nually. Let them hereafter be held no

Paris in 1)arenkss. Total dark
ness, no light whatever only what the
stars give. Think of it, reader Palis
without gaslight. At best that city was
the home of ten thousand of the lowest
class of people found outside of Africa
and the Cannibal Islands of the Pacific
Ocean ; but nnder a strong government,
that established the most perfect police
system in the world, the scum of the city
population was held in check. What
will the turbulent portion of Paris popu
lation do now that the city has no light ?
Darkness and crime go hand in hand, it
is said, and it is feared that in this case
the saying will be fully realized. Aw
ful, indeed, will be the destruction of
property in that doomed place. Some
men have had the foresight to see that
the manufactures of the many fine things
that I'aris need to furnish to the world
must close. The latest news on this im
portant subject was received from Paris,
by carrier pigeons, at ISordeauz, and
thence by cable and telegraph to Mifflin,
that Postmaster Hooks had purchased
his large stock of Candies and Toys just
in time, previous to the extinguishment of
the light in Paris, and that prices bad, in
consequence of the situation of affairs at
I'arie, advanced per cent. Jlr. Books
has the largest and be?t stock of Candies
for the holiday s, ever offered for sale in
this town, also, Toys, Jewelry, kc, with

Virtues op Tobacco Tobacco is
constituted aud composed of the richest,
strongest and mod delicious, and also the
most delightful ingredients. The spirit,
the oil and opium, the sugar of saccha
rine matter, the mucilaginous wax and
gums, the acids and nitre, with several
of the other volatile salts. Sec, all so
harmoniously combined, constitute this.
the richest and the most delicious com
pound ever engendered and generated
in any oue plant. No wonder then that
all classes of every country and clime,
ftora the favage to the civilized part
of mankind, should take delight in its
use. It forms the traveler's companion
and the philosopher's aid. It is the old
bachelor's antidote, the epicure's last
resort, and the sailor's and soldier's third
daily ration. It keeps open the sentinel's
eyes, and besides medical and many
other good effects, it cheers the watch
man in the silence of the night. Won
derful weed this, of American origin.
