A WARNING.
0, ye men of tho South 1
Who w ill prate about wars,
And talk of the Ufa-blood
Puiired out in your cause,
Re member the lesson
You learned in the past :
llemeniher the war clouds
That o't-r you were cast ;
The Spirit or Liberty
Has never been di.-ad,
Look out for the Future,
There aro breakers uhead '.
The North 13 enduring ;
She has borne with you long ;
Hut l.'rr battle cry now
Is, Itown with the Wrong!
The cn l is approaching,
The time di awcth near.
When the pride of your boasting
Shall give way to fe-rr.
In the warnings of prorhecy,
These words miy be read
L00-' out for the Fil'urc,
There are'l reakers ahead !
If you fpurn ill the oiTers,
Tiiat in kin iue.-s we made,
And intuit now Ihc country
You wo.iM fain have l etrayid ;
I'.y (ho proud laud that bore in,
We bid you beware,
1. t.-t from the heights of your hope
You be cast to despair;
Lest you turn fr. m nvtling9
To weep o'er the dead,

OILING A VENToiLOUL'IST.
A noted ventriloquist once took his
station near the engineer to see the work
ing of the machinery. In a few moments
a squeaking noic was heaid on the op
posite side of the engine. Seizing the
oil can the engineer sought out the dry
spot, and to prevent further noise of the
kind liberally applied the contents of his
can to every joint. All went on we'.i for
awhile, when squeaking was heard in an
other direction. The oiling process was
repeated and quiet restored, but as the
engineer was coming quietly around to
ward the spot occupied by the stranger
he heard auo'her squeak. This time lie
detected the tiue cause of the dillieully.
The Stranger was a veutriloquist. Walk

astonished joker by thu back of the neck
aud emptied the contents of the can down
his spine. '-There," said he, "I don't
believe that engicc will squ-.-ak again."
