J. W. CLEAVER, W. C. T. E. W. II. Kreider, W. S. AX OLD INDICTMENT. The Union State Convention adopted the followiug iu 18G5, which holds a yood now as it did then, that tie so-called Democrats stood arraigned before the peo ple of Pennsylvania for constantly ob structiug the efforts of the Constitutional authorities to maintain the life of the ca tion. By inflaming the passions ci 'their ig- uorant followers against the legally eletteil officers of the Feoeial Government, and refraining from all reproach against trea son or armed traitors. By procuring a decision from the Dem ocratic judges of our Supreme Couit, de nying the right of the Government to tha services of the citizens of this Slate for the defence of the imperiled country. By di.-eouraging men from volunteering into the armies of the Union ; thus ren dering it necessary to succumb to treason, or to pay large bounties, aud so burdening every ward, township and borough in tha State with debt to fill the ranks of ous armies. By opposing the enlistment of negroes for our defense, although one white tcao. less was required for every black one wha could be euiisted, aud this at the very momeut vi lien the? battle of Gettysburg was railing on the soil of Pennsylvania, aud that decisive battle was uncertaia. By denjing to our soldiers the right to vote while fighting for the fl:sg cf our fathers, on the plea that such rights were not allowed by oar Constitution, and by opposiNg au amendment which removed their objections and relieved our brava soldiers from this disability. By exaggerating the public indebted ness, denying the public credit, and teach ing tht tLe financial resources of the north were unequal to the suppression of the rebellion. By a shameful opposition to measures for extending relief to the families of Union soldiers, aud by a malignant effort by these means lo secure tho success of the rebels in the fi j' J, or such a protrac tion of the war as would cxh.ar.3t the na tion in its effort to subJ'w their iiionds. But now heaping abuse upon the Gov ernment for vunishing assassins and their accomplices, by demanding the release of leading traitors, by frowning down all al tempts to bring to punishment the fiends who starved our soldiers, and by assuring rebels that neither iu person or property .-h:'ll they Le punished for their ciijiei.
