dersouville. Misi Clara Ba rton, of Wash
iegton, in company with Porcnce At
watcr, who had been a prisoner' at An
dcrsonville, and having been detailed as
Clerk in the Surgeons office to keep a dai
ly record of deaths of all prisoners of war,
went to that place for the purpose of pro
curing the number of the graves ct Union
soldieraburied there. Miss Barton, in
her Report says : "The cemetery, around !
which the chief interest must gather, b
dietant about three hundred yards from
the Stockade iu a north-westerly direc
tion. The graves placed side by side in
close continuous rows, cover nine acres. "
The number of graves marked is 12 920.
There are four hundred graves marked
"Uuknown Union Soldier." But Jew
persons have the remotest idea of what
our men suffered while incarcerated at
Andersonvilic. Tbey sunk wells to the i
