ftsir Vice of all seems to be holding
high carnival throughout the country.
Accounts of horrible murders, fiendish
outrages, bold robberies, daring incendia
risms, and kindred crimes, stare us in the
face in the columns of almost every paper
we open. Rape, more horrible in its at
rocity than murder, and doubly deserving
of death, is of every day occurrence al
most, and in most cases mere children are
the victims. War has been a terrible
scourge to the country, but instead of
improving it has sadly demoralized the
people.

a delightful grove below Jerico Mills,'
a grand Union Sunday School Celebration
held by the Union Schools at Happy Hol

turn out was large, the discipline and or

went ahead of any thing we ever heard.
Short addresses were made by A. H.

paper. . The company were then iuvited
to a great dinner. The table was 1S5

A letter received yostcrday from Juniata,
states that the missin- man is Mr. Vm.
W. Gingrich, postmaster nd merchant, of
Mexico, Juniata county. He Ictt home
some twelve days ago, staling that he was
coming to llarrisburg, since which time
his family has not seen or . heard of him,
nor have they any clue as the cause of his
absence. There are various conjeotures
afloat concerning this myterious affair
some persons think he has been foully
dealt with, and other believing that he
put an etid to his existence during a lera
porary fit of insanity while others hive
circulated that he left oo account of finan
cial difficulties. The latter cannot be cor
rect, as it is said Giugrich paid out several
hundred dollars the day ho left home,
and had notes in his possession on which
no coum oouitu niouty uue nim ai auy
tunc. .Mr. O. was a quiet, sober, bonest
than, highly esteemed by all who knew
him. His family is ia great aistress on
account of the absence of their protector,
and have the sympathies of the commu
nity in their deep affliction.
We are' sorfy that developments
indicate that the charitable constructions
placed upon his disappearance a week ago
are now giving place to a settled convic
tion that he left with a view of defraud
ing his creditors. Though he had paid a
note in bank, yet he had borrowed money
wherever he could and had a great deal of
money of soldiers. The last that is known
of him is that he called at the bed room
of Uo-ace Applebaugli aC the City Hotel
iu Harrieburg and borrowed $15 saying
he was going o Ba!tia!ore. Although it
might be otherwise, yet it seems now to
be pretty well settled that he got all the
money he could and di-camped for parts
unknown. It is true that this is utterly
at varienee with his former character yet
tacts are daily being developed which
point to a settled purpose to carry out
this very gatue. Among others we are
out of pocket $3.00 by tho operation.
Wc feel deeply for his relatives and hunoe

men who was detailed as Hospital. Stew
ard, and to whom the oountry owes a
debt of deep gratitude for the complete
record. The numbers show that about
13000 gallant patriots died there through
the effects of ncgleet, starvation and reb
el barbarity. In this list of Pennsylvania
Regimeuts comprising 1793 of the vic
tims, we recognize the following as citi
zens ot Juniata County :
David Bogar, Sergt. Co. C. 184th
Pa. Vol. of Delaware township, died of
diarrhoea, Nov. 13th 1865, and his grave
is numbered 12,059.
James Leach, private, Co. C. '49th
Regt Pa. Vol., drafted ni'du, of Milford
township, died of Anasarca, August 23rd
1864, number of grave, 6,636.
J. M. Mehaffy, privato Co. B 16th Va.
Cav. of Beale township, died, September
Sth 1864, of Scurvy, grave numbered
8,134.
Elias S. Shively, private, Co. M. 19th
Pa. Cav. of Fermanagh towrship; died
of Dysentery, July 27th 1864, grave
numbered 4,064.
There may be many others that we do
not know, but here arb at least four citi
zens of our bounty who have been cruelly
murdered by inches id one of these j
slaughter pens of the South. J uniata
has a sad interest at Andersonville. Who
can tell its horrors ? It ia the blackest
page of rebel history a page which must
forever brand and damn them as among
the vilest fiends of tbe human race.
