Fourth of Jar. In olden times the
citizens af our towns never periiii&cd the
anniversary oi our National Independ
ence to pass without observing it in a pa
triotic aud creditable manner. For sev
eral years past we have had no general
celebration on the 4tu. In other towns
aud cities the day is still commemorated,
and why cannot it be ia 3Iifiiintown ?
Simply because we have not enterprise
enough among our citizens to get it up.
For weeks we have urged that measures
be taken but no one tesponds.
We have now come to the cooclusiou
to countenance the proposed Celebration
in Pcrrysville, as its citizens seem to
have more enterprise, and have offered a
free dinner to a thousand soldiers.
PEATn OF A CofXTT COMMISSIONER.
We regret to record the sudden death
of John" Foltz one of our County Com
missioners, who died last Wednesday
night very uncxpcctdly. He had been
to town the evening before and merely
remarked on returning that h felt a pain
on the back of his head. Pairing the
night he complained again of not feeling
well, but while a light was being struck
suddenly died. Truly in the midst of
life wc arc in death.
Although 3Ir. Foltz had his cxccntric
ities as well as the rest of us, although
we had no sympathy with his politics,
yet we must in justice to his memory say
that he was a kind-hearted, clever, en
terprising, honest citizen. We say this
because we thiuk so, for we have known
liim from our youth.
Promoted Deservedly. We take
pleasure in rccordiug the promotion of
John K. Robinson of this county to the
full rank of Colonel of the lGth Regi
ment of I'cuna. Cavalry. He had been
acting as such for sonic time, but has now
been fully commissioned as Colonel for
gallaut and meritorious services in the
loot battles South of Richmond.
Col. Robinson at the outbreak of the
rebellion was a farmer icsidiug about
three miles from this place. He was a
young man of energy, decision and firm
ness of character, and had taken gome in
terest in military affairs before the war.
After the Bull Run disaster he took
from this county Co. A 1st Pa. Cav. be
ing the first cavalry company that enter
ed the service from this state, and one
that distinguished ittelf during the whole
war. Subsequently 3Ir. Robinson was
impelled to resign his Captaincy to re
turn home and settle the clock of a certain
old copperhead. Having attended to this
business, in the summer of 18G2 he again
raised a company of Cavalry and became
the Captain of Company F IGth Pa. Cav.
Hero as in his former-company he noon
won the esteem and good will bt all under
and over him. He was promoted to be
the Lieut. Colonel of the Regiment, and

WATKiisruur. luiing the thunder
gust on Monday afternoon last a most fu
rious waterspout occurred below Lewis
town, sweeping away a couple of hundred
yards of the railroad. Ill is phenomena
is nothing supernatural as some suppose,
but is simply caused by jl ,:eollisiou" of
two heavily charged bodies of "rain
clouds" which had been moving in oppo
site directions, thus cnusiug them to
unite aud for a time ' stand still
and discharge their contents in a most
furious mauncr. Thus it will be seen
that is not a 'bursting of "clouds" as the
Germans call it it is a union of two
storms exhausting their fury against each
other aud while the "deadly conflict" cu
sucs the raiu decends, aud the people call
it a waterspout the primary idea of
which term seems to have been that spe
cial accommodations were put up to facili
tate the lettiug down of water.
It is proper to say how ever that what
meteorologists term a icatcriiut occurs
at sea or on large lakes and consists of
a large hollow column extending from
the water to the clouds, whirling and
moving along like a whirlwind on laud.
Iu Arabia they arc often composed of
sand instead of water. We feel like say
itig a great deal more on the causes aud
and uaturc of the phenomena of rains and
storms but we are getting off our
subject for we were only going to say
that in consequence the injury to the road
the trains were detained at this station,
until the next day.
JOT" We learn from the President of
the Juniata Agricultural Society that if
the country remains in a pcacable state,
it is the intention ot the managers of the
