A ; A. STORY Olt DIVORCE.
BTRA4CCIE VICIS9ITUDEB OP A MAUR= LIP S.
It may not be generally knew a h, says the Cin
cinnati inquirer, yet it-is prObably • true, that
the: novel of "East Lynne," although written
in England, had the groundwork of its story In
a SingUlar marriage which took place in this
the notice and. the attending circumstln
_
e.es at the time being copied by ,almost every
paper in the country.. The matter was about
as follows :
A Mr. .1 .M.,a • clerk in a down 'town house,
fell in love with &young lady whose lather was
a well-to-du Second . Street merchant, and alter
a proper season or attention 'the couple were
married.
Both:soon found out that they were not hap
pily mated, and after a marriage of seven years
during Which time they had three children, ttio
boys and girl, they mutually agreed to the
husband applying for a bill of divorce, on the
ground of incompatibility of temper. The di
vorce was granted, and the wife went home to
her father, who lad, through ( endorsing, lost
his business and all - his pioperty. The daugh
tees and bra own raisfortunes weighed so heav
ily. upon the father's , mind that daring a mo
ment of mental alienation be took hie own life,,
leaving his daughter penniless and,to rough it
With the cold, charity of the world as best she
could.' The woman, a brave little creature,
tried every way she know how to gain ati
est livlihood—in fact, working IR bard giving
music lersons and doing embroidery for her old
schoolmates that her health gave way, and, hav
ing no money to pay her board, mustbeg, starye
or go to the poorhouse.
To turn to the other s ide of the picture, the
husband, alter a few months' release from the
marital bonds, again married, and at the time
Of which we speak had not only , the three clip-
Area by the first wife, but also .an addition
thereto--a little two year old girl by the second
wife. I .
The. latter lady being ill,, the husband
advertised for purse and housekeeper, which
notice reached the eye of
,the first wife, and she.
In her trouble, went to the former partner of
her heart, told him of her aid condition, and
applied for the position in his household„• The
husband knew not , what to say ; but after giv
ing her ample
. funds 'for all immediate wants,
asked her to call again at his office on the fol
lowing morning, promising to Consult his wife
about the matter in the meantime.
Promptly ti ( s per agreement wife No. 1 was
on time, as wk, the husbandoind from there
they went to -the residence, 'where the two
wives had their first• c:Onversation,.entling in
their agreement for the first wife tO come and
accept the vacant place; whidt she did, seem
ingly. delighted at having a peaceful home over
her head, notwithstanding- the very strange cir
cumstrumes tinder which such a shelter was
given. .
Necessity demanded that the entire put
should be oblitetated, and the new house-keep
er treated' as any other help ; that she must
must care for the children—her own offspring
it ‘d • the - other-child—the same as! any hired
nese' would do ; that she must eat at the sec.
and table to .care tor her charges.' All these
things and even more humility did the poor
woman Show, never by sign, wordor look ex
hibiting the least evidence of discontent, What
however, must have been the true feeling of
her heart, when seeing another filling the s place
that she had once triad; as atie thou t, so hard

When the cholera was raging hi our city in

and being Informed by the physlchin that she
could not live but a tow hours at the most, as'
she was then in a collapsed condition, she ask 4

husband and the housekeeper, vihen she told
how much she dreaded leaving her child among
strangers, and as 'a dying wife entreated theni
t.i marry again. The proposition was a strange!

WEBSTER'S HOME
A correspondent of .the 'Boston Okbe his
bean visiting the horn of Daniel Webster st
Marshfield, and writes t ,
The mansion bowie is a typical American
homestead, quite extensive, with an air Orcom
fort and convenience.and in some way unpresar
es one u' the. abode of put greatness. Suffi
ciently ornate to satisfy good taste, it has as
unpretentious grandeur- that accords well with
the spot.
Though occupied ne
. a private residence and
not open forpublic inspection still the writer
and friend were most politely received and
shown the principal rooms by the excellent la
dy of the house. The first room visited was
the library, which is the guest 'and naturally
the most interesting apartment. It is situated
in - one of the wings of the house, and was de
signed by Julia, the lamented daughter, espec
ially for her father's use and in its plan and ar
rangements does great credit to her taste and
AU It is lea as nearly - as possible as it was
at Mr. Webster's death—the great massive
writing table; the favorite . chair, the pictures,
and ornaments remain mementoes of other
days and vividly recall the great life with
which they were so intimately associated.--#
Most of the books have been removed from the
cases for sale, but they are supplied with arti-:
des of vertu and oruaments of great vuriety
and value, the collection of a life time. The
high vaulted walls are adorned with pictures
and busts, many of the former being family
portraits, the most conspicuous being one of
Mr. Webster, by Ilealy, painted at the time of
the signature of the Ashburton treaty, and an
other of Major Edward' Webster in the uni
form of the Massachnsetts Mexican Volunteers.
The staff :and, white felt hat are suspended in
thew accustomed place over the picture of their
former Ossessor.
Other r o oms , the music room, the dining and
morning rooms,l , the star chamber, and Mr.
Webster's room, in which he died, were shown
us, and the particular . features and' , souvenirs
pointed out. They are all preserved in, appear
ance as when the household lost its irmater and
the natioi its greatest intellect. In the dining
room many pictures of favorite cattle drawn
from life; hang on the walli4 while in others
miniatures of grandchildren and sketches of
Webster In rude home garb and white hat at
tract the Cye.•
From the window of the morning•room,
looking' tint upon the great elm, the final fare
well:wasj taken two or three days iletore his
death of the herd of 150 cattle, driven up for
their owner's last view. Mr. Webster had a
strong attachment fur his• cattle, and talked to
them and fondled them as though they were in
telligent twinge.
The miens have that home-like aspect in
keeping With the character of one "to the man
ner hom i t " who here sought relief from the'
carakd state and life, and ever yearned for the
New and pleasures of a beloved New England
home in Which he was restful. -
FPO! A LP. BASE-BALL CLUB.
Solomon said there was nothing new under
the sun, but had he lived to this date, he would
have been forced to acknowledge'that a female
base-ball club was something a little novel, to
say the least.
Springfiekl has a club of this kind, a regtilar
ly organized stockcompany, of which the-prat-
Went, Frank lily rs, ci , g., of the city, is ' the
originator. The , cluh consists of seventeen
members, and is ; called the "Blondes" and
"Brunettes."- The . members, I Jun, told, are
girls who have heed employed in venous pur
suits,i, at probably ! starvation prices, and kayo
adopted this profession as likely to prove more
lucrative. They are
; employed at'so much per
week, and the novelty of the perlbrmance is
expected to make up tor any lack of skill, while
undoubtedly, the crowds it will draw to wit
!less so strange a sight will proie must profita
ble to those interested.
A short time since: they had a public game
here. Their dress was precisely the same as
the male club, excepting that the pants were
tastened at • the knees.. The ."Blondes" were
dressed in blue with white facings, blue and
white striped stockings and jaunty bats. The
"Brunettes" wore white with blue facings, and
striped stockings and' hats to match their suite.
The field and bases were a little over half that
of the usual deld, the bases being only fifty
