Best Breed of flogs
In answer to an ingLiry which is the
best breei of hogs, an Ohio breeder gives
the following reasons for naming the Po
land Cllllll3 as such a breed:
1. They du nut get mangy. I have
never had one that , %as troubled this way
and this is something of so much impor
laliCe that it should not be overlookd by
airy farmer who knows anything of the
evil. '
2 This breed is excellent on =odat
of its early fattening qualities; and yet
for its continued growth it has tin equal
When only nine or ten months old it will
readil) fatten into clear pork, weighir.g
300 noun& or inor. Or they will con
ilotle to grow until twenty months old,
aid then weigh. when fattened; from 45Q
.525 p,unds.
3. It Is the hest feeder on clover and
blue gra.,s that I know of. I have wit•
nessel test experiments which went to
&low that hogs of this breed will make
in )re gain and thrive better on grass
alone than those of any ()Cher breed. •
4. They are naturally quiet at all
times, unless a contrary Spirit is stirtcd
up by abuse. They fatten well, eating
their tin and then lying down. The sows
are good prol tic breeders, kind in litter
and good eucklers.
5. 1 claim that the Poland-China is
tin hog for the packer because of 'the
proportion of weight behind the should
ers and the amount Of high-pribed meut
can aid a correspondingly small
amount of offal product4h It has a small
head and mall feet.
6. It is the breed that we can do the
most with between April and January.— .
I claim that pigs should come when grass
in the spring begins to grow, so that they
can be fattened without haring to winter
them. Or. if we deem it good policy to
hold thorn over. we• want them to keep
on growing during the second summer
with the !rest cost_
I believe the Poland-China is the bag
for the farmer. It is a small-boned and
long-bodied. It has short legs and a
broad straight hack; it has deep sides,
with square heavy hams and shoulders;
it has drooping ears and fine hair, in col
or nearly always spotted black.
Experiment* In Feeding a Iltileb
Cow.
Mitch cows require a large portion of
saccharine Lind oleaginous matter to be
deposited in their tissues, or secreted in
milk. Potatoes are found to increase the
proportions of butter in the milk al a
cow th a t tecals upon them , their starch
being convened it.to fatty matter. It,has
been provetlAiy experiment that the 'pro
portion of butter w the EMU; of a cow
allowed to feed during the dap in a pas
ture, and shut night in a warm stet)
uas much greater in the morning Milk
than in the evening; the former contain
ing 5.6 parts of butter in TOO, and the
latter 2.7 parts. This was eveidutly due
to the d'ininished demand for the mat -
ial for respiration during the bight, when
the body was at rest and the skin kept
warm. •
An experiment was tried of keeping a
cow in a shed during the day, and teed
lng her with grass, and the propoitiom - of
butter in her evtuing milk rose to 'Ad
parts in 100. But this .plan dinritaistied
the proportion of caseine. or - cheesy
tifuE
ter in the milk, which was again ificnias
ed by allowing the cow to pasture in the
open field. Hence it appears that house
feeding is favorable to the production' of
butter, and pasturing to that of, the
cheese.
A Chinese Bee.
The Agricultural section of the En—
tomological Society, at its anual meeting
in Paris, Anguq, 1874, made many inter
esting statements. M.. Durand - Saint—
Armand, a government officer in Cochin
China, states that, that country posesm
a tie twice the size of ours, which collie
quently ought to have a proboscis long
enough to exthet the honey from red
clover, which is known to be very abun—
dant. This bee is found in great numbers
all along the coast, in a wild state,in hol
low trees, and the natives hunt them for
their wax. The extensive forests of this
country are leased for the product of Wax
which is sold to the Chinese. M. Durand
Sanit-Armand has acquired a certain
knowledge of bee culture so us to be able
if possible, to domesticate the_ bee and
send theta to France. Would it norbe•
well fur our bee keepers to investigate
this?, It has a promising look. . ; :
