John Brougham, the well known ac
tor, while perlorming in Baltimore on
last Monday night, sprained his ankle,
and his physicians say he will not be able

The use of red and green wax tapers
on Christmas trees is pronounced highly
dangerous by the Popular Science Mon
thly on account of the poisonous nature
of the coloring matter employed. Yel
low and blue pipers are harmless.
It is said that wax flowers, if left out
iu a - drizz:ing rain, will be thoroughly
cleaned in a short time, and will look
wonderfully refreshed axid thankful. The
hand-writing of a thousand house-flies
may be obliterated in this simple man
ner.
Another affecting extract from a Phila
delphia obituary poem_ has appeared. I
reads:

A Custom has existed in London for
sometime of putting memorial tablets on
houses where celebrities have lived. Thus
there is one on Dryaen's 'house in Soho,
on that of Sir Joshua Raynolds in Lei
cester Square, of Napoleon 111, in King
street, St. James,' and in Holies street,
where Byron was born.
A little canal of twenty-three miles.was
wanted in China in 1852. Time must
be precious there, though life is so cheap.
Only six weeks were given in which to
dig it, though it went through great for
ests and over extensive marshes; twenty
thousand men worked upon it night and
day, and over seven thousand died of fa
tigue.
Mr. A. Bronson Alcott was once ex
pounding his theory of the sin of eating
!ilesia and said, "A man who eats pork be
comes a little swinish, does he not? and
if he eats mutton he is inclined to be
sbeeepish." "Perhaps so," replied Dr.
James Walker, "but I have noticed that
men who live on vegetables are.apt to be
era ther—small —potatoes."
A young man walked into an Indinapo
lis drug store the other day, and called
for fifty cents' worth of strychnine. The
clerk, suspecting his object, gate him a
harmless dose of "sugar of milk." The
youth swallowed it at once and eat down
to die. To the surprise of the clerk be
showed every indication of poisoning,and
he thinks that had he nut told him of the
harmless nature of the potion he would
have died from mere imagination.
The woman's Journal notices the pro
gress of the sex in England. It says:—
There is growing up in England a large
class of women who do not marry, bit
who apparently wish not to marry. They
deliberately devote themselves to Mem
tore, to teaching, to some trade, generally
an artistic one, at any rate to some occu
pation that gives a livelihood and tends
to cultuN, and this they choose for life.

rather never to have been born in them.
