Among pears which he had si•ut to marke: and exhihred to ru.mologists. were some very fine ones not previously known ; soon they were called by his name, Bartlett. There were two trees of this kind in the original planting, both of o hich are now living. arid• are productive of fruit of good size_ and quality. Those two may properly be culled the parents of the mass of 3urtlet pear trees in Amer ica, though doubtless many may have teen imported since, for the pear is of English origin. though it is said not to develop very well un European soil. • Ten years ago, more or less, many of its branches had become much decayed. and nearly the whole top was cut off from the trunk, which seemed sound and healthy. Since then a new top has grown which promises to live and bear fruit for fifty years to come, if properly cared for. It is probasily at Last sixty-five years since the tree was imported to this country, and, if so, its age can hardly be less than seventy years. Waste Nothing. —o— The Chinese, more than any other people, have rednced saving of fertilizers to a science. It is well known that they scrOpulously sate, disinfect, and put to valuable use, every particle of offal. In no other way could their lands be so en riched as to support its teeming popula tion. L:ebig traced the primal lull of Rome to the buildiug of her great sewers which coneucted t( the Tiber fertilizing material which should have been applied to her soil. It was the lack of bread stuffs, consequent upon the poverty of the arrable lands, which drove the Ro mans to foreign conquest, and e'ded to the-overthrow of her own liberty. Onr people are wasting every day, substances which if properly utilized, would save them many a dollar and much tnbula tion. Cheap Fertilizer Road dust should be gathered before the season chars. Thisofteh is the most con venient absorbent the farmer ran com mand, min a few barrels of it will save a large amount of ammonia in the henuerv, the privy, - and the stable. Hens should have a• large open box full of it under cover, !here they may dust themselves at their own pleasure. It is an excellent thing to have in the stable, and when sat urated with brine makes a valuable ter tillizer. The fineness of th_• dust, con tinually ground by the iron tins and horse shoes, is one cause of its favorable action upon crops. That from a clay soil is best; indeed sand, whether from the road or elsewhere, is of but little use as a deodorizer or absorbent *pp:o Jelly. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters are a purely Vegetable preparation, made chiefly from the native herbs found on the lower ranges of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, the medicinal pro perties of which are extracted therefrom without the use of Alcohol. The question is almost daily naked, " What is the cause of the unparalleled success of Vnuroos Brr =as? " Onr answer is, that they remove the (swirl of disease. and the patient recov ers his health. They are the great blood purifier and a life-giving principle, a perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the system. Never before in the history of the world has a medicine been compo ended possessing the remarkable qualities of Vraccisn Biwa's; in healing the sick of every disease man is heir to They are a gentle Purgative, as well as a Panic+, relieving Congestion or In flammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs, in Bilious Diseases. If men will enjoy good health, let them use Visvosu Brrrsus as a medicine, end avoid the use Of alcoholic stimulants in every form. No Person ran take these Bitters Recording to directions, and remain long unwell ! provided their bones are not de ertroyen by mineral poison or other means, and vital organs wasted beyond repair. Grateful Thousands proclaim Vesunee Brim= the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained the sinking system. Bilious, Remittent, and Intermit. tent Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of the Mir sissippi, Ohio, IlEssonri, Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colorado, Bra zos, Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Kreanuah,Roanoke,Jaines, and many others, with their vast tributaries, throughout our entire country during the Summer and Au tumn, and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal viscera. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon theee varlet's organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dn. J. VIA.LKEII'S Veiscisn Brenta, as they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowels ere loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restor ing the healthy functions of the digestive organs. Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eruchitions of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Bil ious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflam mation of the Longs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. One bottle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. Serofa la, or King's Evil, White sued. lings, Ulcers, Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goitre. Scrofulous Inflammations, Indolent Intlammatious, Mercurial Affections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin. Sore Eyes, etc. etc. In these, as in all other constitu tional Diseases, Wsi semis VMEOAS Brrrens have shown their great curative powers in the most obstinate and intractable cases. For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism, Gout, Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys, and Bladder, these Bitters have no equal. Stich Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood. Mechanical Diseases. Persona en gaged in Paints and Minerals, such QS Piumbers, Type-setters, Gold-beaters, and Miners, as they advance in life, are subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this, take a dose of Wamtim's gain Brrr.ies occasionally. For Skin DitiCMOS, Eruptions, Tatter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pus. tales, Boils, Carbunch , s, Ringworms, Scald Head, Sore Eyes, Erysipelas, Itch, Souris, Discoloratious of the Bain, Humors and Diseases of the Skin of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurk ing in the a ; stem of so many thousands, are effeemilly destroyed and removed. No sys tem of medicine, no vermifuges, no anthel miniti, will free the system from worms like these Batters. For Female Complaints, in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of wom anhood or the turn of life, these Tonic Bit ters display so decided an influence that improvement is soon perceptible. Jaundice.—ln all cases of jaundice, rest assured that your liver is not doing its work. The only sensible treatment is to promote the secretioa of the bile and favor its re• movaL For this purpose use Virinain Brn Cleanse the Vitiated Blood when. ever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sores: cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow. H. U. McDONALD & CO.. Dn3/310...d Ger.& Aietsts, Sul rnmeimeo, CaWorn% and our. Waahlaarou and Chariton tit., Nem Tart.
