    FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
Two Kinds or Farmers
—o—
Forrest Moreland, of Heuvelton, N.
Y. in writing to the Country Gentleman
says:
The farm of the careless, slothful, ig
norant farmer, is separates from that of
his more intelligent neighbor by hi tin
dunes more plain than line fences. Mr.
A., while driving a poor team attached to
an inferior crag by a malicious harness
which bad already taken its revenge on
the poor animals by galling in nutnerom
places,suddea ly,stt ikes a stone and breakee
the dr.tg long since deserving a pension
for previous injuries. To quote 31r. 'A's
own words, "phis is jest my luck." In
fact.ms fast as his tools grow old from too
much exposure to the weather and lack
of suitable eare;it is just his luck to
have them breaking when he is in a hurry
This by no means uncommon accident,
furniihes a respite for the horses, and a
jmrney to Mr. A's favorite haunt—the
black-smith's shop.
Passing farmer B.'s Well fenced - - and
highly cultivated farm, lie observed sev
eral young men also engaged in preparing
the sod and sowing grain, but in quite u
different style. One is driving a well
kept team hitched to the cultivator on
which he was riding. It is an improved
implement, which Isuslrequently caused
Mr. A. to wonder- "why on airth Mr. B.
wants to pay so much for a cultivator
when a drag is jest as good." The culti
vator leaves the ground in good condition
for the improved grain drill seen in an
other portion of the field I still another
invention, as Mr. A. maintains for mak
ing lazy farmers. He "allers believed in
larhin - boys to sow by baud, as their
fathers and their grandfathers did before
them." Mr. A.'s boys left him years ago
to learn trades. It was easier for the de
vout Flindoo to pass the lines of caste
than for Mr. A.'s boyti to overcome their
father's overweening confidence in the
agricaltural lore of the past, or pass the
boundary lines that separated theircondi
lion from that of the more fortunate sons
of Mr. B.,—bout a lry lines that hedged
them in, warping their very souls, until
they were ilricemin disgust from a voca
tion they should have learned to love.
Ter. substantial folic( that separates
Mr. A.'s farm from that of Mr. B's is sec
oud only to the strong line of contrast
that separates them to their Ls theat ex ten
On one had, a farm well laid out and con
venient in all Its arrangrnents ; a farm
well ;Hied and susceptible of the highest
cultivation. On the otter hand, a farm
that was never permanently laid out, but
is laid out crew, year after year, to snit
the converience and varying taste of the
owner. "Variety is the spice of life,”and
Mr. A has only to look at his farm, and
the view (there is so much variety in it)
should make him feel quite spicy. The
%artily in the 'shapes of his different
helps is simply astonishing.' Has fields
are regular and irregular ; singular, tri.
angular and cjuadassgular. No two 01
his fields are alike. In one the stones
liaie broke u hits plow and his drug ; have
.worried his team and his temper year af
ter rear.
"But, - says Mr. A., "it never did pay
to give that ere field any extra work; it
don't give half a crop anyway." The re
sult is that those stones get a permanent
letting alone. In another there is an oh ,
vious want of underdraiuing, and Mr. A.
has •hiusru somethin'somewhere' bout un
derdrains. but never rattly did believe in
this 'ere lance farmin'.' Mr. A's far'm it
devoid of all that please 3 the eye or the
pocket of the intelligent farmer, for his
crops are so poor tlot they do not pay
fur even his poor cultivation. "Seasons
are gettin' awful onsartin," says Mr. A.,
in fact, seasons do not seem to be as good
tor Mr. A.'s farm since he began selling
his hay and grain instead of feeding it
on the farm. Mr. A. is a practical (?)
farmer. Men of his stamp are found in
every farming community. They have
been unfortunately placed 63 farms, and
they. stay there. The world moves ; they
do not.
Dettroying the Bark Louse
—o—
There are several species of bark lice,
all more or less injurious to plants upon
which they live, and some are rather
ti.flicult to destroy. The particular
species infesting the a!iple tree (Aspidio-
Ins conchiformit) can usually- be destroy
ed hy thoroughly washing the bark with
strong soapsuds or with a potash
The ••scale-bug" which infests the orange
tree (rocell eisri) is very similar in its
habits to the 14 ple bark louse but is more
difficult to kill. A vigorous use of soap.
suds seems so be only a transient remedy.
The application Of alcohol is also trans
ient in its result. Lately this insect
has made its a2pearance in the orange
orchards in Los Angeles Valley,Calitorrint.
injuring the quality of the fruit to some
extent, and threatening to destroy the
trees. Some of the leading orange mil
wrists in that locality have been expel i
tnenting on the effects of the various
remedies that have been from time to
time suggested, and, according to a card
which they have published in the Lot-
Angeles Herald. have succeeded in find
ing a ours- remedy. The principal ingredi
ent in the remedy. used is carbonic acid
gas, and It is applied by the use of an or
dinary portable Sre extinguisher. The
strength of an ordinary charge is simply
reduced, at ti- it is applied theectly to thi
trees. The inventor lays no claim to ant
patent and Cali Mrnians say that any of
the common patent extinguishers can be
successfully
