    - FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
Selectlog Potatoes For Seed.
Now is the time to select seed potatoes.
If left until planting time there is no
selection. Those are taken that happen
to be left—generally small or misshapen
specimens that have proved unsaleable or
have been thrown aside in selecting the
best for the table. Large size is a matter
of less importance in seed potatoes than
smooth, well-shaped roots. The crop is
grdwn from an eye, not a seed, and there
is this important difference between the
seed and the eye, that while the first al
most always shows a variation from its
parent by cross tertilizatior, , the eye or
cutting forms a continuous growth which
must perpetuate its own characteristics,
The application of this principle in se
lecting seed potatoes is obvious. In the
same variety there are generally some po
tatoes better shaped than others. Most
buyers and housekeepers prefer a long pi..
tato. Toe Early Rose. when it grows of
goad size, takes this form, while the small
est potatoes are round. The same is true
of the Peerless. By selecting the longest
and smoothest specimens for plantine,th iv
habit of growth will become fixed and
acid largely to the value of the crop. This
I know to be so'by experiment I have
a theory that by cutting off the seed end
and planting only the eyes or the long,
smooth part of the potato, this growth
would be 4 . ccelerated. It is certainly rea
sonable to "on ppose that eyes from the seed
which is open nearly round, would pro
duce more potatoes than if cut front a
long. em-.nth surface. The seed end of
potatoes is also crowded with eves, and
this also an undesirable quality to per
petuate. Something may also lie gained
by cutting ont eyes that are too deeply set
into the potato, or too prominent on the
Surface. These are ohjeet ionable features
and should he guarded against The size
of seed potatoes is of minor importance
except from the fact that the best shaped
potatoes tire of meditim it: large size.—
Monstrosities of every shape should be
avoided. With the best of care in select
ing seed there will he some misshapen po
tatoes caused by stones or other obstacles
in the soil. Manuring with coarse ma•
mire issald to make potatoes grow prong
ed or knobby ; but some experiments made
this year do not warrant this idea.
think ashes and gyr sum on potatoes tend
to make tubers large and well-shaped. If
seed potatoes are kept in the Mier they
should be covered by a few sods to keep
them front drying tip, and thus injuring
the eves. The gilds will also retard the
sprouting of large varieties until planting
time, thins insuring a more vigorous
growth'. Almost every year seine Early
Rose planted about chi t , first of June fail
to grow he-cause the eves have started once,
exhantting the starch in the potato which
LS dried op mail it is almost worthless for
seed. A little care at this time will save
a great deal of vexation and loss in the
potato crop next season.

Cherry Pectoral,
For Diseases of the Throat and Lungs,
such se Coughs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, dathms,
and Consumption.
Among the great
discnrcries of modern
science,, few tire of
more real vain., to
mankind then this ef
fectual remedy for all
diserices of the Throat
and Lungs. A vast
trial of its virtues,
throughout this and
' other countries, has
shown- rime it does
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony of our best citl
tens, of all, clames, establishes the fact, that
PFOVIIAL wilt mid does relieve and
cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyedd any other medicine- The most
dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Cansump.
tion., cured by this preparation, are public.-
Iv known, so remarkable as hardly to be be
lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
As a remedy it Is adequate, on which the public
may re:y for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the rumrunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be compoted. It . challenges trial, end con
vince, the most sceptical. Every family should
keep It on band as a protection against the early
antlunperceived,attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, If neglected Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it. As a safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Circuity PECIVLIAL
Ls invaluatile; for, by its timely use, multi
tude., are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It nets speedily and sorely against ordinary cola,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
ono will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily
ther can be cured.
(Stigmay the product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
Is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It mar be confidently re
lied neon as possessing all the virtues It has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cares as
memorable as the greatest it has aver effected.

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing
which i s at
once agreeable,
healthy, and
effectual for
preserving the
hair. It soon
restores faded
or gray hair
to its original
eolon.with the
gloss and freshness of youth. Thin
hair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can-restoro
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can bo
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so, that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of foaling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it' gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma
tion of dandrtiff,.which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious substances ihich make .
some preparations dangerous and jitju.
rious to.the- hair, 'the Vigor can only .
benefit but .not harm it. ' lf wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSMG,.
nothing else can. be found so desirable. .
Containing, neither oil nor dye, it does
-not soil white cambric, and yet_ lasts
king on the hair; giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.
