WI Fever In Cowl,
— The following.'by Prot, franc - or Co;
nell University, New York, upon the pre
vention and cure of milk fever in cows,
will be read with interest:
This disease is essentially connected
with_ plethora, or excessive formation and
highness of olood. Its victims are mainly
the cows that lay on flesh rapidly, or
those that give an abundance of rich
milk. A strone, vigorous digestion and
great powers of tmeimilation, therefore,
properties which render their possession
so valuable for feeding or dairy purposes,
are precisely those which predipose them
to this destructive complaint. Let a cow
—of-this stamp calve early in .Inm:won - our
pastures of rich and juicy clover, expos
ed to the great heat of an American snot
met and with little le-s of blood in the
„. process, and she is but too likely to prove
a doomed animal. The snpply of blood
to, the womb necessary to support the em
bryo calf is suddenly arrested and thrown
' .back on the system at large; it has not
. .het become diverted to the udder so as to'
establish a vicarious seeretion of milk ;
the richness and plasticity of the blood
supplied to the nervous centers are iucom
patible with the due exercises of their
functions. and the nervous system,alrvady
exhausied hp the strain made upon it by
partnrit.c..yosoa sympotlieticalty depressed
. by the loaded combrein of the dilzesti , e
and circulatory systems, is suddenly pros
trated, and too oft. it beyond recovery.—
Toe suppressions of the secretions alike
of the bOWels, kidneys, skiii and udder,
ravidly aggravates the already unhealthy
state of the bTooil.and death often results
' from 4poplexy, or serious effusion on the
brain.
Perrention.—Then, the main causes of :
the disease can be, ton great extent, obvi
,yed. It is not desira,de to seek to change
the tendency of the animal to the pro
duction of beef or milk. But wi ut
prejudice to these prop-rties,we can check
the production of blood at the time of
calving and even reduce the already. ex
isting state of plethora We can keep
.calving cows in the yard for a week or
fortnight before the expiring of gestation;
we can restrict their diet to a halt or a
fourth of what they would consume if
.iteft Mthe Rash:res.; we can seeethat s e
bowels are always kept acting freely, eith
er by reason of the nature of the food or
by giving two or three ounces-of sulphate
of soda daily in the fond; we can induce
'n considerable depletion from t he circa
: latuty system by giving a dose of physic
(one pound to too pounds eps sake , ac
,eorfling to the size Ortlie animal) to rct I
at tile time of parturition or immediately
afterward; we can rub the udder and
-
"draw the teats so as to insure an early
and free secretion of milk: and we ran
keep her on a very restrictive and laxa
tive diet for the first week after calving.
With sufficient care the disease may be
almost entirely prevented.
Curatnt Trtatirra—This is so pricer
, Jain in its results that it is folly to ne
glect any measures of prevention. Strong
purgative, ice-bags to the
head, rubbing, the udder, drawing the
teals, copiously warm injections, and
damp sheets laid over the body and cot
; ered by dry ones ur tepid spongirg over
the surface, may he all employed, and in
slight cases will prove successful. In the
earliest stages. while the animal is r;.11
able to stand and the pulse is full and
strong, bleeding irom the jugular may
ward of the severity of the attack; later
it will only increase it. In cases attend
ed by .little r,,pr, halt dram doses of nux
vomica morning and evening are of great
, value.

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its, ,
natural Vitality and Color. •
A dressing
which i s at
once agreeable,
healthy, and '
effectual for
preserving the
hair. It soon
restores faded
or gray hair
to its original
color, with the
gloss and freshness of youth. Thin
hair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed but such as remain can, bo .
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that, a new
.•
growth of hair is, produced. Instead..
9f fouling the, hair with a pasty,sedi-,
went, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional tise will prevent the hair
from turning giay or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and"fwevents the forma..
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those.'
deleterious substances which - make
some preparation.s 'dangerous and ii jw
rious to the hair, the Vigor can only
benefit but not harm it.. .If wanted'
merely for a HAIR DRESSENO,: .

Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
