FARM AND HOUSEHOLD. Extensive Land Owners. The San Francisco Bulletin says:— "There are probably more large Lino owners in California than any other State in the Union. Many large ranches have been cut up. But while this has been dons, other parcels of lands have been concentrated in few hands. Edward Ap plegate owns 49,146 acres of !and in Fresno county; C. Burrell owns 23,403 acres in the same county; W. S. Chap man owns 33,712 acres, and W. S. Chap man t Co., own 89.886 in this one coun ty ; James Seelig & Co., own 26,664 acres: Miller & Lux own 128,649 acres; J. 0. Earl hue 22.209 acres; Nate Friendland er has 47,450 acres; J. H. Goodman is credited with 19,000; W. Pierce et s'„ have 25,763 acres; A. J. Pope, 20.270 acres ; J. W. Pearson has 44,831 acres; Joseph Rues owns 23.169 acres in Hum bolt ; Mrs. M. E. Betties holds 173,065 acres in Kern county; J. H. Reding - on has 46,720 in the same comity; W. C. Ralstene has 15.415 acres; Chapman Jen son and others. 74.408 t.cres ; 11. Bryan• 20,520 acres ; A. Well has 49,920 acres: Clark &-Cox, 16,960 acmes; and W. S. Bailey & Co., 19,735 acres In Alameda county. Charles McLaughlin has 24.• 876 acres in Contra Costa county, and over 60,000 acres in Amador county. The greater part of the lands repre.en tell above have been tannin d intl.:pendently of Mexican grants. The tivt rage cost for the whole was pi Mistily not much over a dol lar in gold per acre. Greenbacks and scrip of various kinds have ben used while some have bought for cash at sec ond bands. These great lend-owners have a good opportunity to bring in colo nies and build up flourishing towns, Very little has yet been dune ia this way in this State." Storing Roots for Winter. Thousands -of bushels • if potatoes and other roots are lost annually through in s Ancient protection from the cold. It is not necessaty to store roots in a cellar.— A well covered pit out of doors will keep them fresher and with equal safety. Only the small quantity ut potatoes nod other roots which u family needs during extreme weather should be kept in cellars tinder dwelling houses. There is some degree' of fermentation and decay in large bodies of any kind of legetab'e, eve, in cold weather. and the effluvia from these is a cause of fevers and other di-eases often prevalent in some houses every sinter and spring. But to keep potatoes in l its reqaires some judgment and n tderstand ing of the business. List winter grt rind exposed to the wea.b-r froze in some pla ces four feet deep, and this extreme co 4,1 was a source of gram. loss. Of course no farmer would thibk of burying potatoes four feet deep. and even if he d d they might be frozen, as the heap would nec essarily he a mound on the surface of the ground completely exposed to the weather. The great secret of sneers= is hair the earth piled in layers with some :minis Nice between which will lay I. oArly, and thus hold a quantity of dead air, one of the best non-conductors of heat. A oything which will keep a quantity of air und's hailed between the roots and the blast of winter will answer the mirpo.:e. The best way to do this is to have not less than two, and better still if three coverings of coarse, dry straw, lying us loosely as pos sible, and each well covered with a g od coating of earth. If potates a.e dog early they may be covered at first only with straw nod potato vines. As dan,..er of frost approaches covet wi•lt six to seven inches of earth. Then give another lib eral coating of coarse straw—the c artier the better—and cover this at least ten inches deep with earth. If more cover eng W . -needed, another lay , r of straw, lightly covered with eat tit, will aff,ird ample protection in. the tfr veriest weather. It is not the depth of stil s ninth as the imprisoned air confined with and under the straw which insures succeSl The Foot of a Horse. ——o— The human band has often been taken to illustrate Divine triAlt.m.=-and very well.
