Repeated experiments show that one
thashel of corn per year is sufficient to
peep one fowl which runs at large, in ad
dition to the other things obtained by
?singing. hens that are shut up should
lie allowed uo more grain than those at
free range, but they should be given grass
sn summer, mowed often so as to be kept
short and tender, and in winter raw cab
bage or boiled potatoes, or fresh vegeta
bles of some. kind. Also as an equiva-
lent to the insects they are deprived of by
confinement, give a small daily ration of
animal food, such as sheep's lights and
livers, either raw or cooked, finely minc=
ed ; or, which are the cheapest and come
ready cooked, chandlers' scraps crushed.
The value of a year's allowance of vege
tables and meat per head will just about
equal onezlialf a bushel of corn. It will
generally he found that at times. or in
parts of the country, when or where corn
is remarkably cheap or dear the priest of
potatoes, etc., and of animal food also,
will be correspondingly high or low, so
the above estimate is of wide applica-
tion.
Therefore theprice of one bushel of
onto represents the keeping of a fowl run
ning at large, and fifty per cent. added to
this is the cost in the MSC of confine
ment. Ny,eittre speaking of a bared of
averngelize and appetite. It is not to be
expected thig_tetalun and a bantam
vrill prOye equal in feeding capacity. A
great yield-lit eggs is accompanied by
great consumption of food ; henoe, fowls
of prolific breeds may, though of small
size, eat more than large hens that lay
sparingly. Also a breed which like the
Brahmins, tend to fatten, will, it given
all they eat, consume more in proportion
so their size, when not loving, than a less
plump variety like the SPanish will un
der the same cii en mstances.—Prarie Far

To do this offectually is cue of the sp
parent impossibilities of modern farming.
Every farmer knows it from experience.
Notwithstanding the utmost pains and
ears in ploughing, the grass, especially H
long, will bristle up in beards and tufts
here, there, and eyerywhere, injuring alike '
the appearance of the field and its ea
pcity for growth; for this grass, instead
of being visibly present to draw nourish
ment for itself and impede the growth of
something else much more profitable,
should be buries beneath the surface to
manure the soil and assist in the growth
of its betters. Well, do you w eh to reme
dy this great difficulty? If so, use the
chain and ball to your plough. No mat
ter what kind of a plough you have, try
them. A piece of ill - dimity trace chain
will do very well. Fasten one end of it
to your coulter, and to the other end at
tach a round hall of from two to three
pounds weight—having the chain long
rough to permit the ball to reach back
to about the middle of your mould-board
--and there let it drag along, on the off
Bede, of course. This is not a new idea
—in fact it is a very old one—but, like g o od
wine, age only improves it. Just try it
once, and we have no fear of your ver
dict. It may not do the work to absolute
perfection, but it will perform it at least
fifty per cent. better than you cum with
out it.—Canada Fanner.

Cows usually become addicted to kick
ing when heifers, from hetug milked by
abusive milkers. I have never seen an
ehl cow become a kicker unless uhused.
Instead of cows being averse to being
milked when giving a large quantity, I
have found it the reverse. When pas

night with udders distended 'aim milk,
our "down List" cows seem grateful
to have it removed. Milking a heifer for

will almost invariably kick. In tuck a

buckle it up nioderafely tight, and so
soon as she gets quiet (for site may dance
around a little at first.) take dour pail, sit
down and go to milking, for the is us
helpless as a kitten.
Do not attempt to use a rope in
stead of u sirup, for it will tt-it u•o•vrer.
This is a much better nittlurl than ty

ir is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can -be
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi

Its omasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the

merely for a HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can bo found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does

which can bo cured by
timely resort to this stand

proved by the hundreds of
testimonials received by the
proprietors. It is acknowl
edged by many prominent
physicians to be the most
reliable preparation ever in
troduced for the relief and
cure of all Lung complaints,
and is offered to the public,
sanctioned by the experience
of over forty years. When
resorted to in season it sel
dom fails to effect a speedy
cure in the most severe
cases of Coughs, Bronchitis,
Croup, Whooping Cough,
Influenza, Asthma, Colds,
Sore Throat, Pains or Sore
ness in the Chest and Side,
Liver Complaint, Bleeding
at the Lungs, &c. Wistar's
Balsam does not dry up
Cough, and leave the cause

most preparations, but it
loosens and cleanses the
lungs, and allays irritation,
thus removing. the cause of
the complaint.
