Tux Democratic-Executive Committee
of the Third ward, Philadelphia, has
adopted resolutions to the effect that us
Sam Josephs has united with ItepubliCin
nngstera,.he has forfeited all claims to
the confidence of Democrats ; also that
Atbert W.. Fletcher, whom they charge
with treacherously violating, the trust re
posed in him by destroying the Demo•
oratio tickets and substituting other
therefor, be expelled from the Democrat
ic Executive Committee of that Ward.
AMERICAN travelers abroad *probably
experience the immediate effects of the
recent panic even more than citizens at
Lome. It is said that many of them who
hold letters of credit on the suspended
banking houses in the tinted States find
themselves without funds, and are cum.
gelled to accept friendly subscriptiOns to
enable them to return. Mr. Jay, the
American Minister at Vienna. has writ
ten to Washington recommending that
provision be made for senditighome from
Vienna a n umber,of wailers, laborers, and
other Americans, who ars now in tl.at ch.
ty in a destitute 'condition.
ntritstsN is a wonderfully lucky 111-
low: Neither a bold nor an original man
he is regarded by his admirers as a gen
ius and a hero; a man without persotal
magnetism, he is spared and liked even
by bis political adversaries. A. master of
rotund common-places, with a stalwart
figure and a resonant voice, he has all the
appearance of an orator, and, pitted
against Conklin and Carpenter, is an ef
fective debater. He has made his mark
in the Se.iate, where he is justly regard
ed as an ornament, being- undoubtedly
an accompliihed and upright man. Hang
it looks as though we shall have to
'rapport for President yet l—Cour

C. cloud. of lowa, has issued ,
*book entitled "Monopolies and the Pen-
ple;" the aim or purport of which is to
‘ - present a clear erposition of the evils
suffered by the people at the hands of the
monopolists; causes which led to the de
thronement of the people in a land where
the people are soyere'gn ; a history of
the insidious approaches of the monopo
lists and their final instaFetion into pow
er; an account of burdens they laid up
on the people; their attacks npon consti
tutional government and public morals
hostile attitudes to the best interests - of
the country." The people should bear
both sides of this issue, and Mr. Cloud
presents the anti-monopoly view of the
matter in the strongest possible light.—
lie declares that in twelve years Congress
gave to railroads an extent of land great
er in area than England, Ireland. and
Scotland combined. The fortieth Con
gress stone gave away to railroads one
hundred million acres of public land, and
bonds to the amount of two hundred
minima of dollars. Mr. Cloud also dis
cusses the tariff, direct taxation, Patent
laws and the legality of any tender
gilld and sitter, and makes all those ques
tions bear oh his opposition to monopo
lits and their outrages upon the people.

It is amusing to see the Bradford Re

even the Montrose Republicau, so resigu

Representative of.this district as eveu to
rejoice over his fitness for the position.
They seem ' to feel it in their bones" af
ter the battle. We can but presume that
it E. B. Hawley bad received about 100
more votes he would have been heralded

jury of interested partici ought perhaps
to be punished with a severity proportion

rule has created. In Athens, Me, we ob
served that one David H. Carson, a trial
justice, has been sent to the State Prison
for three years for perjury in testimony
given by him in a case in which he was
interested. The court justified the se
verity of sentence on the ground "that
perjury has been on the increase since
parties have been allowed to testify in
their own behalf."
