Stamps on Wills.
The Cotnini,,ioner of Internal Revenue, in

On Friday niatt last, between eleven and
to rive o'clock, a tire was discovered in the cel
lar under Avery's Music Store, on Warren
street. Mr. T. A. Miller, who lives in an ad
join:n.l, building, with nothing but a partition
wall between them, was aroused by the fumes
nt emote, and upon making examinationjound
the fire as above stated. It had made so little
progress that Mr. Miller soon extinguished it.
The fire was burning in one corner near an old
reloline machine, which still contained amen
quantity of gasoline. In a little while longer
the fire would probably have communicated
with this gasoline, when the building must cer
tainly have been burned, and most likely the

The Supreme Court of Massachusetts has
made a decision which possesses interest for
mediCal.men everywhere. The Massachusetts
Medical Society, some time ago, undertook to
expel such of its members as j racticed home
opathically, and organized a Board of Trial for
carrying out its purpase. This Board was re
strained from proceeding by an injunction sus
pending its action until the legal point invoked
had been decided ; but now the Court refuses to
grant a Ihrther stay, the Board of Trial being
adjudged competent to expel homeopathists, if
they deemed the evidence of medical berry suf
ficient.
Nearly SuWeaned
Yesterday morning, about three o'clock, as
officer Rosenthal was walking on his beat, be
heard the screaming of a child in the alley be
tween Wyoming and Penn avenues, near Mut- .
berry street. Upon going to the house from
whence it proceeded, he found father, mother,
and three daughters almost suffocated from the
effects of coal gas. The eldest daughter, aged
about fifteen years, was almost gone, and the
others were unable to speak. The discovery
was made in the following singular manner: In
the next room to where these parties were
sleeping, were two boys and also two man, who
were on a visit to the family. One of the little
boys woke up at the hour designated above and
called to his oldest sister to get him a drink.
Getting no response be went Into the room and
found the condition of altars as above stated.
lie gave the alarm which awoke the stranger
and at the time attracted the attention of the
officer. The winticws were thrown open, and
after getting a circulation of fresh air Into the
room they soon recovered. The gas was dis
covered to have come from a chimney.
The name of the family is Baker, lately mov
ed here from Hawley.—Seranfon Repuldiran.
To the Young.
Rev. John Todd gives this excellent advice t)
the young :
"You are the architects of your own fortunes.
Rely upon your strength of hotly and soul ;
Lake furydur motto self-reliance, honesty and
industry ; fir your stunt faith, perseverance and
pluck; Inscribe on your banner "be Just and
fear not.' Don't take too much advice; stay at
the helm and steer your ship. Strike out.
Think well of yourself. Fire above the mark
you Intend to hit. Assume your position.
Don't practice excessive humility. You can't
get above your level—water don't run up hill.
Put potatoes in a curt over a rough road, and
the small ones will go to the bottom. Energy,
invincible determination, with the right motto,
arc the levers that move the world. Civility
coats nothing and buys everything. Don't
drink, don't smoke, don't gamble, don'? lie,
don't swear; don't tattle, don't deceive or stenL
Read good books. Love your fellow men us

March.
The keen north wind pipes loud ;
Swift scuds the flying cloud;
Light lies the new-fallen snow;
The ice-clad eaves drip slow ;
Fur glad spring has begun,
And to the ardent sun
The earth, longtime on bleak,
Turns a frost-bitten cheek,
Through the clear sky of March,
Blue to the topmost arch,
Swept by the new year's gales,
The crow, har.h clamoring salts
By the swift river's flood ;'
The willow's golden bhxsl
Mounts to the higher spray.
More viv;cl day by day ;
And fast the maples now
Crimson through every bough,
And from the alder's crown,
Swing the long catkins brown,
Gone in the winter's pain,
Though sorrows still remain,
Though eyes with tears be wet,
The voice of our regret
We bush,lo bear the sweet •
Far fall of summer's feet,
The Heavenly Father wise
Looks in the saddened eves
Of our unworthiness;
Yet doth he cheer and bless,
Doubt and despair are dead ;
Hope dares to raise her head,
And whispers of delight
Thrill the earth day and night,
The snow-drops by the door
Litt upward, sweet and pure
Their delicate bells ; and soon
In their calm blaze of noon,
By lowly window sills
Will Laugh the daffodils !

Coal 011 Accidents.
The great number of accidents from coal oil
!of late, has called the attention of the public
authorities to be quality of the oil sold for do
mestic use. Among other scientific bodies, the
Franklin Institute appointed a committee to in
quire Into the whole subject. Their report Is
full and Intelligent. As to the quality of the
oil they say ;
In regard to the inflammability of the petrol
eum products, two indications have been fixed
by which this quality may conveniently be esti
mated, and which at the same time afford the
antysure indication of the safe or dangerous
character of any of these products. These
standards are called respectively the flashing
end burning points The first or the tempera
tare at which the sample evolves an infLimma
ble vapor; the second is that at which the oil
itself. At the ordinary warmth of our dwellings
the lighter oils are constantly throwing off vol
umes of vapor, the approach of a lighted match
to which will ignite it at once and at some dia.
lance from the surface of the material. In the
process of burning, the metalic attractiveness of
a portable lamp for household purposes will
communicate sufficient heat to the body of the
nil within to fill the whole of the space above
oil with its vapor. So long as the lamp remains
unbroken the confiued vapor cannot be made
to explode or ignite. But if the lamp be shat
tered by the tall the inflammable vapor in the
neighborhood of Um flame would at once ex
plode. If the oil is of the proper quality there
could not, at so ordinary a temperature, be suf
ficient vapor geuerated to cause an explosion.
Recent tests and inv es tigations, made with
industrious, learned, and exhaustive researehat
the Franklin Institute, in conjunction with the
committee, by Dr. William 11. Wahl, the able
Secretary, and Dr. T. it, Wolf, of Delaware Col
ere, of a number of samples of oils furnished by
the committee as having been obtained at ran
dom from various dealers, wholesale and retail,
In Philadelphia, may be fairly considered to
represent the average quality of the oils our cit
izens are daily using in their households. From
the tabular statements of the countilltee ti Is as
certained that the combination fluids retailed
all over our city stand but 51 degrees Fahren
heit, the fire test being 110 degrees Fahrtlaheit.
Only four out of the twenty-six samples stood
the Government test of 110 degr is Fahrenheit.
These samples were obtained, says the report.
"from persons who drive an extensive trade in
retailing to small dealers, and establish charac

which adds a peculiar interest to the specimens
is the fact teat they are extensierty adz/ern:lo un

Special Notice*.
A Disease with a Thousand 13ymtoms.
Dyspepsia is the most perplexing of all hu•
man ailments. Its tip:atoms are almost infinite
in their variety, and the forlorn and despondent
victims of thediaense often fancy themselves the
prey, In turn, of every known malady. This Is
due, in part, to the close spmpathy which exists
between the stomach and the brain, and in part
also to the fact that any disturbance of the di
gestive function necessarily disorders the liver,
the bowels and the nervous system, and affects,
to some extent, the quality of the blood. A
medicine that, like Hostetter's Bitters, not only
tones the stomach, but at the same time con
trols the liver, produces a regular habit of body,
braces the nerves, mollies the fluids and "minis
ters to a mind diseased," is therefore the true
and only specific for chronic indigestion. Such
is the operation or this famous vegetable restor
ative. It not only cures dyspepsia, but also all
concomitants and consequences. Moreover, it
is invaluable as a preventiveof indigestion, No
one who chooses to take half a wineglassfill of
this agreeable appetizer and stomachic habitual
ly three times a day will ever be troubled with
oppression after eating, nausea, sour eructations
or any other indications of a want of vigor in
the digestive and assimilating organs. Thede
bility and languor superinduced by hot weather
are immediately and permanently relieved by
the Bitters, and persons who are constitutional
ly inclined to look upon life "as through a glass
darkly," will be apt to take a brighter and more
hoperul view of the situation under the gerbil
influence of this wholesome medicinal stimu
lant.
