•• We copy the following article from

its last issue before the election underthe
Local Option Jaw. We make no MlTl
ment,q, except to say that if we had pnt.r.
%lied such an article at such a tune,
prefaced,we should at once have
ben pronounced an enemy to the cause 1 1
of temperance :
We do not feel disposed to question the
editor's own admission, that the people
have so little confidence in his honesty
that such an article quoted from another
papetWould'have been of sufficient evi
dence to have condemned him. In fact,
he shows by the above paragraph that he
has no confidence in himselfcr his repu
tation in this sectiim for ginuine temper
anee principles, which is very rationally
accounted for by looking over the files of
his paper fora few years past. He has
been, zealous in prating about the "Whis
key. 'Democracy" but when temperance
was applied to his own party candidates
he has considered it of no importance for
it would "defeat our party." We are
well pleased that he has, for two weeks,
been a very "gushing" convert to the
"no license" doctrine, which public opin
ion and a little of our preaching has
brought about_ We would advise how ,
ever tlMt he be kept "ou probation'' one
year or until after tho next-politinhl cam

lowship by honest• temperance men.;
