the manure to the roots; where it canoes '
a vigorous growth early in the spring. 41
the ground is plowed for a spring crop, it
is also bentefited by having the manure
ready to be absorbed by the soil whenever
the ground thaws; the seed, soon as it
sprouts, finds what it needs close at hand.
On cod ground to be plowed for corn in
the sprin.., the.same advantages are gain
ed es In tie case of grass lands, and the'
manure is on the spot in time, which in a
late season it might not be, for want of,
time or improper condition of the ground.
But after all, it is-far better to get the
manure upon the ground before it is fro
zen if possible ; the earlier in the fall, the
better. Winter topdressing of grain is
only a poor substitute at best for a proper
and timely preparation in the fall and
rarely pays for the trouble unless it may
be in the advantage gained by the spring
sown clover.
Remedy for Stammnt Wells.
Tau WATER in wells frequently becomes
foul from various causes ; sometimes from
the soaking into them of surface water
from rich laud, where there is a large
amount of vegetable or animal mold,
sometimes from their being an amount of
water in the well, which if not drawn off.
stagnates and becomes offensive. A body
of water remaining undisturbed fora few
weeks is liable to become foul which, if
occasionally agitated, would remain good.
If stagnant water becomes unpalatable, it
may be rendered drinkable by pouring it
from one vessel into another three or four
times, letting it, fall two or three feet.
By so doing, it comes in contract with
the oxygen of the air, which purifies it
Another method of purifyieg water is fil
tering it through sand or charcoal. A
hogshead two-thirds ful, of sand can be
set near the well, the water pumped into
it, t. ho' 3 made in the bottom covered with
sponge and the water will percolate
through and be purified. A chain pump
or bucket is the best for a well, as it agi
tates the water every time it is used.
The Dooth of Rata
Tilt first manner of killing them is
the old French-plan, followed in Paris by
the men who make it a
,special business.
They take a deep tub with water ou the
bottom and a little elevation in the mid-'
die like an island, on which is only place
for just one rat to sit. The top is -cover
ed and has a large balance valve opening
downward. On the middle of this valve
is placed a piece of fried perk or cheese,
and when the rat walks on it, to get the
cheese the valve goes down, drops the rat
into the water, and moves back to its po
sition. A road is made from a rat hole
to the top cf the tub by means of pieces
of board rubbed with cheese, so us to
make the walk attractive to the rats. In
the course of a night some ten, twenty
or even more, rats may go down; and if
the island was 'not there they would be
Found most all alive in the morning quiet
ly swimming round; but the provision of
the little island saves the trouble of kill
ing them, because their egotistic instinct
for preservation causes them to fight for
the exclusive possession of the island, and
on which in the morning the strongest
rat is fonnd in solitary possession, all the
others being killed and drowned around
him. Second, a plan invented by one ef
our friends. The floor near the rat house .
is covered with a thin layer of moist cans
potassa. 'When the rats walk on this
it makes their feet sore, these they, lick
with their tongiie which makes their
mouth sore, and the result is that they
shun this lecalityoaot alone, but they up
pear to tell all the rats in the neighbor
hood about it and eventually the house
is entirely abondoned by them, notwith
standing that the houses around may be
full of rats. And third, the Dutch meth
od. This is said to be need successfully
in Holland. A number of rats are lett
by themselves in a very large trap or cage,
with no food whatever. Their carving.
hunger will cause them to fight, and the
weakest will be eaten by the strongest.
After a short time the fight is renewed,
and the next weakest is the yictim, and
so it goes on until one strong rat is left.
When this has eaten the lust remains of
any of. the others it is set loose; the ani
mal has now acquired such a taste for
rat flesh that he i: the terror of ratdom;
going around seeking what rat he may
devour. In an incredibly short time the
premises are abandoned by all other rats,
which will not come-hack until the canni
bal rat has left or died.
To PEE T _ENT CATTLE JUMPING.-,- , A
correspondent of the Vermont Farmer
thus describes an improved jumping stick:
First, pat a piece across the horns. Then
have a piece of hardwood board, one-half
ED three-fourths inch thick and about
three feet long. Have a bole inserted in
the bar across the horns in such a way
that when this hard wood strip is insert
ed in it' running out over the back, as
the animal naturally carries its head, the
rear end will be just free of the back.
Drive three or four shingle nails, ground
sharp, into this and, letting them come
through three-fourths of an inch, so that
as soon as the animal mikes an effort to
r..ise its head to jump the fence, the nails
mil soundly prick his back, and be will
be apt to frisk his tail and start for some
feed that is easier to be obtained. For
cheapness and durability this arrange
ment is unequaled. It weighs less than
three pounds; it iltnot in the way in trav
eling around, and when the animal lies
down it is on on one side, as it is natural
for the animal to throw its head opposite
to the side it lies on. When they are
feeding it is upright in the air. It will
keep the animal to which it is applied
where he belongs, sure.
POTLTO Bergin,—Wbo has not eaten
Ind relished that famous German dish
;: lotato salad; This is the way it is made :
Cut ten or twelve cold; boiled potatoes
into slices from a, Auarter to half an inch
thick; put into 00:id-dish with four ta
blespoonfuls tarragon or plain vinegar,
"six tablespoonfuls of best salad oil, one
tablespoonful of minced parsley, alld pep
per and salt to taste; stir well, that all be
thoroughly Mixed. It should be made
two or three hours before, needed on the
table. Atichoviewolives, or any pickles,
may lke added to this salad, as also cold
beef, thicken or tnrkeyi if flaked, liatit
is excellent without thus.

Sarsaparilla
Is widely known
d oas one of the most
f t tl-, e ff ectual remedies
e ever discovered for
CO cleansing the sys-
X . ',tlW " tem and purifying
' the blood. It has
l( stood stood tho test of
years, with a con
scantly mrowing rep
- utation7based on its
intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have lurked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous disease;
Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis
orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches,
Boils, Pimples, Ptistules, Sores, St..
4ntliony's Fire, Rose or Erysipe
las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald
Head, Hingivorm, and internal Ul
cerations or the Uterus, Stomach,
and Liver. It also cures other com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep
sia, Fite, Neuralgia, Heart Disease,
Feinting Weakness, Debility. and
LeueorThcea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
]t is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vi , ror of die digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor or the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. The system moves
on with renewed vigor and a new lease of

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color.
color, with the
hloss and freshness of youth. Thin
air is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can bo
raved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty 'sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Thal
restoration of Vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from thosi
deleterious substances which, make
some preparations dangerous and inju•
rims to the hair, the Vigor can, only
benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil .white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.
