repeated the story to G.'L. Stone, - post-master
aC Montrose, who at once wrote a series ,Of let
ters to DcLong, Judgeßalcom, and the )3ing

were published in proof of my veaality.
In reply I will say, that as for rho " honest
old RePublialu," I-trill attend Wilts - also. when
convinced that there Is, ono of that character
left in the party. Stone misrepresented me both
in his letters to the, Ringbarnton,. parties, and
In his account of the affair; In my talk „with
Stone, I asserted that Grant passed - through

that be Viai iit Binghamton at all, and I assert
ed that tieLtitig assured me that he was there
and did not show bhuself outside of the car. I
said it was reported that he sat with bowed
head, acting rather stupid, and I believed be
was drunk. Istill believe so, for I don't think
even a reelection would tempt Grant to ride so
far and teep sober. Ills intemperance *wheels
too fhlly established_to be suematully, disputed
The only thing in thetransaction that affects
my veracity, IS the letter from BeLong denying
that be told me that dram was drunk.- -But: I
did not give him as authoiltylfor Grant's' State,
only for his being in Binghainton and not show
ing hhautelf. Stone knew this, and rho whole
thing is an electioneering dodge between him
and the contemptible editor of the ../icpnwrion.
None of the letters thaprovo, the Charge that
Grant was drunk.. Judie Belem says he nev
er sew hint drunk,_ and DeLong never heard
that the citizens of Binghamton called upon
himote- • Tlutt is all. Stone admitted to me
that the article wronged me, and called upon
the editor to have an explanation appear in the
Repubfia' in, clearing me of the charge. But the
editor refused.. Said he, "I wrote that article,
and lam responsible for it." So I leave Stone
—my business is With the editor. How does he
appear in this transaetioir Simply eats wilibl
libeller. He publishes an attack' upon Me, ac
cnaing me of falsehood. He is then informed
that his article WOMMi me, yet he declares it
shall tannin se it is.: He sayis'- . -" I told that lie,
-Hr. Stone—tern responsible for many Iles—l
- won't feel one more." Now I appeal Mall fair
minded men. What Is the proper course to pur
sue with such a creature, Ile is too contemp
'time to mete, and it Is well for him that he is so.
Were he not hisvimbliierer be ableto - ait down
to indite his slanders; What can be his object
in allowing semis a libel upon a citizen to go to
the world imiefided? Simply this, Ile is one
-of the 'dirty workers in. politics. His nature is
grovelling, his Intellect of that peculiar grade
that requires slime to put it In smooth working
order. Ile is incapable of Writing a candid, fair
editorial, which will here weight with thinking
men.: lie can only work-among the lower in
tellects which can be reached by slang. '
During past campaign:Lille 'editorials in his
paper, have been generally able articles. This
year they areal! slang.' The reason Is that in
the past they were taken from the Tribune--
this campaign throws him on his own resources.
It taxes his brain terribly to write even such an
article as his libel upon me, and once written
it must stand. What!" he cries, "do so much
dirty work, and then undo it, Never! They
say I cannot write. Show them that.- It is my
very own. lam proud of it."
It Is past the course even estranger world ex
pert him to pursue, should he observe him pro
ceeding meekly through the streets, or docilly
following the cows home front pasture, his head
bower] forward, as if in shame for being so con
telnptible. In the conduct of his paper he dis
plays an utter want of honor,„ If he can make
what he thinks a good Mt fur Grant, helloes not

rication inythinnut of the Way. if he libels
a man, he knows his party friends, anti if he is
proved a libeller, the majority of his readers
will never find It out, if ho keeps dark himself.
His paper Is fartependear—a slave to party to be
