During the pr quits of the Convention on

were presets ere highly entertained by a
stirring specs % film Gen. McCartney, who Is

sections of the country. The General treated
the matters at issue in this contest, in a manner
"ditch brought repeated applause from his hear

first speakers of the day. Ills presentations'of
facts and figures, were given in an eloquent,
happy and convincing manner, and he poured
a full volley of'lleas7 artillery r into the corrup

A Phenomenon..
The Albany Timm has the following account
or what it very justly calls a phenomenon : It
was seen on Wcdnes:ay last, about six. miles
Lynn Albany, beyond the Old DlcKowtt wood.
During the storm which prevailed, a cloud,
funnel shored &sounded from the heavens, ex.
tending apparently from the clouds to the
ground. The tail was near -the ground, and
within this peculiar shaped Mass, smoke and
fire were seen to prevail to a degree, which
caused general alarm among the residents in
that locality, being itupreased with - the Ides that
Plantamour's comet , had been delayed tuadcome
at last. The funnel shaped mass would "setter

agree as to circumstances referred to. Ailek the

Suicide.
William Pendergast, the man who on the 27th
of May Made awattetimt I:mulish:ado Rev ,
Father lgeKee, of the Catholic chinch at Cats
gangue, committed suicide in jail at Easton on
Friday night of last week by banging himseit
by the neck to the inner grate door of his cell.
Pendergast was evidently -insane, having this
idea in his head that' Father Ideßee, had been
following for years past with the intentions of
doing him bodily harm. The attempt to lynch
the prisoner at the time of the shooting so
preyed upon his enfeebled mind that it was im
possible to disabuse him of the fdca that the
men were stidin persuit of hint. This, !aeon
nection with the noisy confusion of a political
meeting near the prison on the evening of his
doing away .With himself no doubt hastened
the catastrophe, the unfortunate man thinking,
in nil probabilityobat the enraged crowd would
soon be upon him. Deceased was 39 years of
age, and a native of Ireland—Leighton News.
An Impoitant Suit.
About one year ago Mahlon Mclntyre was
ejected, according to his affidavit filed, from a
passenger train-north on the Lehigh Valley
Railroad at a place where there was no station,
at night time, and where Mclntyre was totally
unacquainted with the country roundabout.
The allegation further states that.the next down
passenger train, on the above mentioned rail
road, ran over Mclntyre, cutting off his left leg,
and that he laid where he fell until the next
morning, when he was found by a man living
— on the opposite side of the river. The station
near where this accident happened is called
Kittatinny, on what is called the Lizard Creek
grade. 3lclutyro haS brought suit In the Le
high County Court, laying his damages at t. 10,•
000. The case will probably be tried at the
September term this year.—Register.

"That Uhler Pill." .
The Administration organs turd orators have
demonstrated to their entire satisfaction that
Mr. Greeley was an original secessionist; that
he was never an abolitionist ; that ho supplied
John lirown with money and the K:ursas emi
grants with Sharpe's rifles; that he was the
Grand Sachem of Tammany and used Tweed as
his cat's-paw to steal millions from the City
Treasury; that Jeff Davis would have been
hung but for his bail-bond, and that he owned
the pistol with which Lincoln was shots Ile
wrote the most satage articles to . urge on the
war, and run his neck off to make peace with
the Rebels. Ile is a fanatic on temperance, and
owns most of the stock in three distilleries. Ile
has always denounced the use of tobacco as a
den.lly sin, and is the chief proprietor of a cigar
manufactory. Ile Is opposed to woman suf
frage, end quarreled with Mrs. Woodhull for the
championship of Free Love. He is an Atheist
and a Universalist, never goes to church but al
ways sleeps through the prayers and sermons,
cats no meat but is an Epicurean gourmand, has
the whitest and purist skin of any man in
America but is a mulatto by birth, an Indian by
adoption, and by maression a poltroon. His
housels the haunt of all the worst men in the
city; and he has never kept house because it
was cheaper to " board round." He was the
foremost apostle of " miscegenation," and hates
a negro out of sight. Were he elected Presi
dent he would rsenslave the blacks, repudiate
the national debt, agree to pay all the Conteder
ate bonds, shut up every bar room and beer gar
den in the Union, put every temperate man in
Jail, compel every cripple to do military duty,
require the women to sweep the streets and
scour the country, atop all divorces. abolish
marriage, and stock the White House with
more wives than Brigham Young can boast of.
He would get rid of the army and navy, and de
clare himself military' dictator, and make the
Potomac irrigate his apple trees. He would
concentrate all the capital of the country in
manufactories, and oblige everybody to buy
What I know about farming" and go out
west. Or course be would enter into a con
spiracy with the yellow fever and cholera to de
populate the'conntry, require everybody to be
inoculated With the small pox, establish the
coolie trade, invite a Heathen Chinese into his
Cabinet, ina make Buddhism the established
religion of the Lind. This is but the beginning.
It Is easy to.estimate the grade of intellect
which such representations satisfy or scare.
Most people have so much curiosity on board
that they would really like to know what this
unique and wonderful creature would do in the
Presidency, and will help elect him just to sec
what will torn up. •

Invalids affected with feverishness can safely

Cons FOUDFK—Mr. Alexander. Reed,: or.

practice is to cut up his corn as late as he can
and avoid frost. After husking, the stacks are
bound and carefully shocked till cured, then
stowed in barn. They arc prepartsl for teed
as follows: Each morning and evening the
quantity needed for one feeding is cut with a
"power cutter," put in a tight box with a ntis

is then poured on and the box closed _with a
tight lid, soils to shift in both heat and steam.
That steamed at night is warm In the morning,

noon. Mr. Reed states that, prepared in this

way.
