the City of New York, on the fourth of Sep

More than one hall of the expensive and useless
litigations of the country couldbe saved if peo
ple were in the habit of putting their agree
ments in writing. Each word in our language
has its own peculiar meaning, and memory.
May be the change of its position in a sentence
conveys-1m entirely different idea from that in
tended. When once reduced to writing, ideas
tie tired and inelastic:

follecring Circulars for the information of those
entitled to an increase of. pension under theism
act of congress
"Persons who are already pensioned under
the act of June 6, 1860, at either of the rates of
$l5, $2 or V 5, are entitled by an act passed
Juno 8, 1872, to incr sseil rates, and may secure
such increase...without, formal_ application and
without the intervention of an attorney; nor
will any atturneyship bo recognized in such
cases. A letter from the pensioner pensioned
at above addressed to this office, enclosing his
present pension ce . rtitialtes and giving,his post
office address, will be a sufficient mpleitentatien
of his claim to the, Increase. •

and earnest exhortations, were free from all po
litical or prejudicial coloring, and were received
with marked attention and interest, by a large
and intelligent audience. The pyrotechnical
display was unavoidably omitted on account of

publican of 17th inst., I find an editorial on the
statements of the lion. Henry Sherwood, ut
reference to the dissatisfaction of republicans
of this county, with the nominations of the
office-holders convention at Philadelphia. It
Is claimed that there is no such dissatisfaction
existing. The statement of Mr. Sherwood may
be too strong. Yet there are many independ
ent Republicans who repudiate the Philadelphia
nominations.
I have been in five towns of this county, and
in all of them I have found u goodly number of
reading and thinking Republiants, who urn not
office seekers, but who control to a great 'ex
tent, by their candor and intelligence the senti
ments of their naspectivii towns, who are sup
porting the Greeley" and Brown ticket, besides
many more who will do so if there are but two
tickets in the,fiettl.
