We-prefer a rainy . spell for setting
plants, and the operanou is performed in
the usual manner with a sharp pointed
stick for - a dibble.
As soon as the rain is over, and the soiP

stirring of the soil, while the dew is on,
early in' the morning, very promotiVe of
a quick, vigorous growth. - By reason of
the plants being Eetlow down on the. side
of the bed, with the ridge of earth in be
tween every two rows, the first three or
four workings are very quickly done by
merely, drawing down a part of the bed
and pulling the fresh earth np around the
roots. The operation is much more quick
than when the plants are set on level

practice of many persons. A chief ad

when the earth is finally worked down to
a level, as it will be, after a few hoeings,
the plants is then found to be deeply set

There-is *great difference of opinion
as to this question. Our own is that the
mole is harmless as a rule—sometimes it
damages lawns and gardens in pervert of
its food, which usually is the earth worm.
If it should.go through a hill of corn and
injure it by loosing the rootless, it is still
in pursuit of the earthworm, which is, in
dry times, found about the roots
. of corn
and other vegetables, grass, etc., more
atinndantly thin elsewhere. ' So far as
observations extend, we have never known
.the mole to cat vegetable matter. It
would seem to be, strictly, a earniverous
animal. And on this bead here is some
thing to the point: Mr. Weber, ono of
the sanrns of Zurich, Switzerland, recent-_
ly examined the stomachs of a number of
moles cauglit in different localities,
but failed to discover therein the
slightest, vestige of plants or roots;
whereas they were .filled with .the re
mains of earthworms. He shut up sever
al of these animals in a box containing
earth and sod with growing grass, and a
small case of grub or earthworms. In
nine days two moles devoured 341 white
worms, 163 earthworms, 25 caterpillars,
and a dead mouse. Fed with a mixed diet
of raw meat vegetables, the moles ate the
meat and left the plants; and when veg

Ptmlpktns Among Corn.
A correspondent of the Country Gentle-
Tan says: Corn, as we all known, is a
warm climate productions, and needs all
the warmth of the sun it can get. Where
the land is rich, pumpkins vines will al
most cover the ground, and consequently
the sun's rays cannot shine on and warm
the ground, which is so necessary to a
good growth of corn. This year by war
of experiment I ploughed up 4 acres of
moderately rich land, and planted two
acres in corn and pumpkins seperate.
The first grew well until the vines began
to run, and then it seemed almost to
stand still; the stalks were large enough,
but it did not ear well, while that without
the pumpkins was the best piece of corn
in the neighborhood. • About two-thirds
was good for seed, while there was more
than enough pumpkins to pay fur the ex
tra land." •

young .chickens. Afters hen has been
setting till well-established, sprinkle a
small handful upon her eggs when she is
off, and upon every part of the- nest and
for a little distance alraroundit • When
she goes on disturb her just enough to
make her bristle her feathers, and then
dust another handful down the skin, up
on her head, neck and every part of the
body not in contact with the nest, and do
not omit to put a small pinch under each
wing. Then when the chiokens are
hatched there will be no vermin whatever
to leave the hen and ,gather upon the
young, as is frequently the case when no
precautions are taken. One thorongh ap

.tuckened, falling hm checked,
and boldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can be
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the 'hair with a pasty. sal-
moat, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair,
from turning gray or falling off, and.
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma
tion-of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious entistances which make
some preparations dangerous and inju
rious to the hair, the Vigor can only
benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING,,
nothing else con be found so desirable.
Containing nelher oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a gmteful'perfume.

Is widely known
as ono of the most
effectual remedies
ever . discovered for
cleansing the sys
tem and purifying
the blood. It has
stood the test of
years, with a con
stantlygrowing rep
utation, based on its
intrinsic virtues, and sustained' by its re
markable cores. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities;
or disc sus that have lurked In the system
for years, soon yield to this ,owerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly , known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases,

It is an excellent restore; of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. The system moves
on with renewed vigor and a new lease of
life.
