Bumble Bees.
Boys think it is glorious fun to fight
bung:de:bets, but they should not be en
couraged in the warfare. Bumble bees,
like all the hymenoptera, play an import
ant part in the..green field of nature. The
vein-winged insects which fly from flower
to flower do not injure or destroy the
flowere t bat, make them productive by
disturbing the pollen. They also rid us
of Innumerable noxious caterpillars and
otlr insects, which they convert into
wlfolesome'food for their offspring.
The ordinary honey-bee performs its
work well iu the fertilization of white
clover, but its proboscis is not long
enough to enable it to reach the nectaries
of red clover. For the fertilization of the
red clover we must rely to a great extent
upon the bumble-bee.
Dawin has called attention to the inti
mate connection between the number of
cats in a given district and the yield of
rCd CloTerseed. The mice destroy the
biinble bees and the cats destroy the
mice ; therefore the more cats the eore
bumble-bees, and the more bumble-bees
thczrea, ter is the redclover yield. In
orirer , to make red clover grow more
abundantly in New Zealand than it does,
some enterprising gentlemen are taking
of importing colonies of bumble-bees
from England. Our young friends will
thus see how earnestly the bumble bee is
desired in countries where he works not.
Then Should we not protect what we
hare; and which performs each import
ant services in our fragrant meadows'?
We think so, even tf it does interfere
witr-the';wild pleasures of careless boy
hood.
Willow Fence.
In giving a description of Mr. D. White
field's fence, near Potomac, a correspon
dent of;the Michigan Parmer says, the
first thing that took my attention was the
willow fence. Its beauty and its thrifti
ness was quite an attraction ; and on ex
amination I found that it was a living
prediction against cattle, sheep or hogs.
TAtis fence has grown up so rapidly that
the shoots were strong enough for stakes.
Tau were put in from two to three feet
aparkand the smaller shoots were wat
tled between them. The stakes all grow,
sending out their thick shiiots, and the
larger layers in the wattles followed the
example. There are enough shoots now
on this hedge to furnish a great number
of farms with sets, and it can be trimmed
every year into any shape that snits the
owner, supplying sets by the million, and
there is now a great demand for them.
He has other hedges coming on, and lie
iutends,to fence his whole farm as fast as
it &in - be - conveniently done. This is the
best and most rapid growing fence I have
yet seen, and it no doubt will be a great
acquisition to the agricultural communi
ty. As the stakes grow in size, the hedge
ettrins and grows iu strength.
Care of Horses' Legs.
Pew men who handle horses give prop
er attention to the feet and legs. Espec
ially.is this the case on the farms. Much
time is spent of a morning rubbing,
brushing and smoothing the hair on the
sides and hips, but at no time are the feet
examined and properly cared for. Now,
be it known, that in this six thousand
year old world of ours the feet need more
care than the body. They need ten times
as much—for in one respect they are al
most the entire horse. All the grooming
that van be done won't avail anything, if
the horse is forced to stand where his feet
will be filthy. In this case the feet will
become disordered, and then the legs will
gefiliary tut of,fix, and ,with; bad feet
and bad legs there is not much else of the
horse fit for anything. Stable prisons gen
erally, are terribly severe on the feet and
legs of horses, and unless these buildings
can afford a dry room, where a horse can
walk . aroand,.lie down or roll over, they
are not half so healthy and comfortlble
to the horses as the pasture, and should
be avoided by all good hostlers in the
country.
How To KEEP BUTTEII. SWEET.-It is
the easiest thing iu the world. Simply
put it in clean jars, and cover with a
strong brine. This will keep pure butter
8 I eat.,...fresh and sweet, as we know by ex-
Ileilence. It is almost equally good to put
in oak casks, headed tight. This is equiv
alent to canning fruit. The brine, in case
of jars, acts as a heading, keeping the air
out. But butter should be made well;
we have never experimented on poor

ANTIDOTE FOR POLSONS.—A plain far
ditteritettus; "It is now over twenty
years that I learned that sweet oil would
cure the bite of a rattlesnake, not know
ring,* would cure other kinds of poison.
Practice, observation and erperience have
taught me that it will cure poison of any
kind, both on man or beast. The patient'
must take a spoonful of it internally and
bathe the wound for a cure. To cure a
horse it takes eight times as much as for

w,ltich effected a cure. It will cure bloat
te t tnittte caused by fresh clover. It will
cure the sting of bees, spiders and other
insects, and persons who have been
poisoned by a low running vine called
ivy.
To MARE WATER COLD IS SOIREE.
—Let the jar, pitcher, or vessel used for
water be surrounded with one or more
folds of coarse cotten, to be constantly
kept wet. The evaporation of the water
EiU.carry_off the heat from the inside,
and reduce it Ws freezing point. In In
dia and other ticipi&tl climes, where ice
1 aunt be procured, this mode of cooling
-water is common.. Let every one hare at
`lns' 'Place of employment two pitchers thus
provided, and with lids or corers—one to
`contain water for drinking, the other for
evaporation—and he em always have a
supply of cold water in warm weather.

One's Friend.
Money can buy many things, good and
evil. All the wealth of the world could
not buy you a friend, nor pay you for the
lots of one. "I have wanted only one
thing to make me happy," Hazlitt writes;
"but wanting that, have wanted every
thing." And : "My heart, shut
up in the prison house of this rude clay,
has never found, nor will it ever find, a
heart to speak to."
We are the weakest of spendthrifts if
we let one friend drop off through inat
tention, or let one pull away another, or
if we bold aloof from one for petty jeal
onsy or heedless slight or roughness.
Would you throw away a diamond be
cause it picked you ?—one good friend is
not to be weighed against the jewels of
all the earth. If there is coolness or un
kindness between us, let us come face to
face and have it out. Quick, before love
grows cold! "Life is too short to quarrel
in," or to carry black thoughts to friends.
If I was wrong, I am sorry; if you, then
I am more sorry yet, for should I not
grieve for my friend's misfortune? and
the mending of your fault does not lie
with me. But the forgiving it does, and
that is the happier office. Give me your
hand and call it even. There !it is gone ;
and I thank a kind heaven I keep my
friend still! A friend is too precious a
thing to be lightly held, hat it must be a
little heart that cannot find room for
more than one or two. The kindness
feel for you warms me toward all the rest,
makes me long to do something to nine
you all happy. It is easy to lose a friend,
but a new one will not come for calling,
nor make up for the old one when be
comes.
WHAT I SEE FROM MY WINDOIV.-II
is said ; "Distance lends to the beauty of
any object ;" and especially is this true of
scenery. It loses its picturesque beauty
as we approach, and a scene that an artist,
stationed at a distance, would make en
chanting, on close examination portrayed
not the least of beauty. But nature 'has
spread before the fastidious eye a feast,
and as we glance at the hills stretching
alone as fur as the eye can reach seeming
to meet the azure sky, which stoops as if
in gentle acquiescence, and motherly
tenderness, we feel, that no artist can ex
cel in beautifying its outlines ; he may,
indeed, in coloring, for nature indulges in
colors but slightly.
Just such bright pictures as meet my
eye to-day are spread all over the country ;
but very few admire scenery in the true
light. "The eye ,must admire before the
heart can areciate ;" so our hearts are
filled with the love of the truly beautiful
as our eye feasts on the ruins of wealthy
grandeurs, that nature declares free for
ail. Over the scene that meets my eye
to-day hovers a sky filled with fiery
clouds majesticaley moving, under the
great vault of heaven; and these silvered
clouds add greatly to the inspiration that
I have gleaned from the page of the open
book of nature.
FIVE WAYS TO DESTROY ANTS.-I.
Pour, copiously, hot water, as near the
boiling point as possible, down their bur
rows and over their hills, and repeat the
operations several times.
`A Entrap the ants by means of narrow
sheets of stiff paper, or strips of board,
covered with some sweet sticky substance.
The ants are attracted by the sweets, and
sticking fast, can be destroyed as often as
a sufficient number are entrapped.
3. Lay fresh bones around their haunts.
They will leave everything else to attack
these, and when thus accumulated can be
dipped into hot water.
4. .Pour two or three spoonful of coal
oil into their holes, and they will abandon
the nest.
5. Bury a few slices of onion in their
nests and they will abandon them.
