    A Letter From Nevado.
..31a. EDITOR :—The DEMOCRAT is It welcome ,
visitor, and its neat appearance, the well-select
ed articles and editorials, cause A to be read by
many - who have never seen the hats and valleys
te
of Susquehanna, and I frequently hear those
who read it, remark, that it is one of the best
country papers they ace. The local items are
especially interesting to me. My earliest recol
lections carry me back to Snake Creek valley,
four miles north of Montrose, and although it Is
nearly fifteen years since I last visited thtit sec
tion of the country, it is a pleasum VI hear
strangers speak in praise of anything emanating
from our old county town, especially when I
consider it worthy of it,
In late numbers of the DEMOCRAT, I find un
der the head of" Local Intelligence," a notice
headed " Bodies to be Exhumed," which a few
years since would have been sufficient to have
founded a half-dozen Stories for Sunday School
books, had it occurred in Mndoostan. A great
deal has been written about heathen mothers
throwing their children into the rivers, and
widows burying themselves with the dead bodies
of their husbands, and we have been horrified
by the descriptions and illustrations of Cannibal
ism ; while here in the United States, and in a
s.•etion of country where people boast of en
lightenment, who probably contribute to the I
support of Missionaries to enlighten the heathen
we still find those who seem to be afflicted
with the superstitious traditions of the darkef
ages, leading them to acts at which in this age
of enlightement humanity revolts with a shud
der. Who can imagine anything more revolt
ing than eating the ashes of a corpse? and it the
body of a near rclsative I Those who believe
in it might well be compared to the heathen.
Mr. A. 0. Warren has proven himself fully com
petent to overthrow superstition and Cannibal
ism, and I suggest that he be sent as a Mission
ary for a year or so at least, among these people.
About seventeen or eighteen years ago I via
had Harford to witness an exhibition gotten up
by the students of Richardson's school. Here
I saw Harriet Beecher Stow's ideas illustrated.
An ambitious young man, not satisfied with the
unpopular Caucasian race, appeared colored to
suit the occasion. This exhibition was Intend
ed to teach those present that the people of the I
Southern States were little better than heathen
and barbarians. Since that time, I have resided
in Louisiana and Teeac, about sevenyears, and
about five years in Missouri, and I have not seen
or beard of such a loathsome, detestable prac
tice or belief as that of eating the ashes of a
dead body! even among the ignorant negrocs.
You may think this too harsh to publish, but I
do not think that such an abomination can be
condemned in too strong terns; we still Claim
that the people of the United States are at least
civilized. Very Respectfully„
ALBERT CIICBCITILL.
A Narrow Escape.
On Tuesday of last week Mr. Mark Compton
living at " Pigeon Roost," Berlin township,
brought to the slaughter-house of Mr. Hart
Freethy, butcher, of Tracyville, near this boro.
a quantity of beef, with a view of selling it to
him.. Mr. Freethy at once pronounced the meat
diseased, and requested Compton to take it away
and bury it. This the latter declined to do, but
finally concluded to give it to the hogs, and Mr.
Freethy assisted him to throw it in the pens.—
After handling the meat Mr. Freethy remembers
scratching a trifling sore on his cheek, which
operation came well-nigh costing him his life.
The next city, three out of the four hogs which
fed on the beef were found dead, a dog belong
ing to a neighbor was also killed in the same
manner, and toward the close of the week the
poison began to show its terrible effects in the
blood of Messrs. Freethy and Compton, the
neck and the body of the former swelling to a
fearful extcnt, and the arm of the latter being
similarly atlected. At this writing (Wednesday
morning the 10th instant), we understand tha
there are evidences of improvement in both
cases, and strong hopes are entertained of their
recovery. The escape trom a terrible death, if
indeed they do escape, must be regarded as al
most mimcnlons.
. We have heard various rumors as to the cause
of the death of the animal which Mr. Compton
sought to dispose of as above, but in the ahsence
of positive information forbear giving them to
the public. Suffice it to say that it was not the I
result of any disease brought ft - mai the West,
and that Mr. Freethy had no further connection
with the poisonous-beef than to urge and assist
In what he supposed to be the harmless dispQsrd
of it. We believe our butchers invariably exer
cise the greatest caution in the selection of thsir
meats. and this very transaction, which may
cost one of them his life, brings out the fact that
had it not been for his experienced eye and de
aisice protest, we might now be recording a
wholesale slaughter of our citizens instead of
this less terrible, but still distressing, result,'"

The Last Swindle.
Among the many swindling operations of the
day the patent right dodge is largely practiced
on farmers, and we have heard of several cases
in this county within a year. The following
note is a copy of one now in use by these sharp
ers. It will appear at first sight to be perfectly
simple, and no person wishing to take an agency
for any of the many patents, would hesitate to

Now, having read the above note carefully,
and supposing it to be all right for $lO, just cut
it in two between the word or, and bearer, in
the first line, and you will find that the left hand
piece ! is a perfect note for $275, Having in
duced a farmer to accept an agency, as specified
in the original note, and having attained his
signature, the sharper departs He then cuts
off the right hand portion, proceeds to the
nearest broker or banker, to whom he offers to
sell the note at a discount on the plea of need
! ing the money. The signeis generally a re
! sponsibie person, well-knora to the business
men of the village, and the 4 note is purchased.
! When the note falls due it is presented for col
lection, and as the signatures are indisputable,
the horrified farmer is compelled to pay $275,
when he only supposed that be owed $lO.
