—Within the last sevent y - five years,
France has been three times a r i erblic,
three times an Imperial monarch under
the Bonapartes, three times a ourbon
kingdom, once a Constitutional monar
chy under Louis Philippe, and once a
military Dictatorship under Cavaignac.
.But even that statement does not show
all the changes in the form of govern
ment within the period named. Consuls,
Emperors, Presidents, Kings, National
Assemblies, Provisional Republics and
Dictators have played hide and seek with
France during three-quarters of a eentu

pgrA Story is related of a boy who
was watching his school-fellows as they
snowballed an old gentleman's windows.
The old gentleman unshed out of his I
house, determined if possible to inflict
some severe corporeal punishment on the
offender, saying when he caught the boy,
"now, you rascal, I'll thrash you within
an inch of your life!" Acco, e

ued until the old gentleman stopped him,
with the exclamation : "Boy, what are
you laughing at ?" "Well," said the boy,
"I'm laughing because you are awfully
sold; /atul the boy!"
larThere is a structure which every
body is building, young and old, each one
for himself. It is called character, and in
every act of life is a stone. If day by day,
we be careful to build our lives with pure,
noble, upright deeds, at the eud we will
stands a fair temple, honored by God
and man. But as one leak will sink a
ship, and one flaw break a chain, eo one
mean, dishonorable, untruthful act or
word, will forever leave its influence on
our characters. Then let the several
deeds unite to form a day, and one by one
the days grow into noble years, and the
years as they slowly pass, will rise at
last a beautiful edifloe, enduring forev
er to our praise.
Modern Praying.
A Cape Cod elergymau one Sabbath
day prayed most earnestly for rain. He
entreated the Lord to "uncork the bottles
of heaven and send down the refreshing
showers." The dronth bad lasted through
August and a part of September. Tues
day morning the line storm began, and
continued witn great violence till Friday
flooding the country and sweeping of
bridges in all directions. Saturday night
it set into rain again, and Sabbath morn
ing it was still pouring down. This time
the prayer was as follows; "0 Lord, we
recently took occasion to entreat thee to
uncork the bottles of heaven and send
down the refreshing showers, but we did
not mean that the corks should be thrown
away."—Another is told of "Parson
Howe," of Milton, 001:10. On a similar
occasion, if not during the same droutb.
petitioned for relief in these words : "0
Lord, we want rain very much. The rye
is suffering prodigiously. Of Corn, we
shall not have half a crop. As for the
potatoes, it is all up with them ; and there's
the grass of Deacon Oonastock's, it is as
red as a fox's tail."
An Indian Tradltfon.
It is a standing tradition of the Niag
ara Indians, shared to a great.extent now
by the white people in the vicinity of the
Falls, that the "Great Spirit" or Thunder
er of Waters must have annually four
victims sacrificed to his power. Curious
ly enough, a year seldom passes during
which at least four persons are not drown
ed either in the falls or the whirpool be
low. This year an old mac of more than
70 years stepped into the breakers above
the Falls, and losing his hold, was swept
over the frightful cataract. At De Vasa
College, a student, daring his companions
to wade into the whirlpool, was sucked
into its terriffic eddies, and instantly dis
appeared, to be seen no more. A few
days after wards a drunken father ad
ventured, with his two children and a
reprobate companion into a boat above
the rapids, and in their drunken orgies
the little ones were thrown out and drown
ed, though the two drunken wreatches
escaped. So far, therefore, the Indiana
believe implicitly in the four-fold sacrifice,
and each year's disasters confirm their
belief.
ADVICE BY BILLINGS.—The wise and
gifted Josh Billings tenders all whom it
may concern the following advice : Don't
court for munuy, nor buty, nor relasbous;
those are just about like the ilo refinin
business—liable to go out of order and
and bust at any minit. Court a gal for
Inv for the for you bare—for the virchu
and biziness there is in her, for a wife and
a mother; cort her as you would a farm,
,for the site, and the perfection of the
stile; court her as if she want fule and
you another; cort her in the kitchen over
the wash-tab as well asst the planer, court
her in this way young man, 'and if you
don't git a wife the fault won't be in the
conrtin.
