Couldn't Spell It.
/ti Yankee from the Green Mountains,
visited the city of London. While pass
ing through one of the thoroughfares,
hisrattention was arrested by some speci
mens of writing paper, exposed for sale at
a shop window. Seeing the proprietor of
the establishment standing at the door,
Yankee civilly inquired of him what he
did with 'them nice bits of paper?'
" We keep tgem to tie up gape seed in,"
said the cockney snappishly. •
"Oh, ye du—du ye ?" said Jonathan.
Passing down the street a few steps, our
indignant Yankee saw another merchant.
" I say, mister, can you tell me what
that feller does for a lirin' what keeps
them ere nice bits of paper at the win
der ?"
" Yes, sir; ho is a small dealer in paper.
and a sort of a scribe. He writes. letters
for persons."
"I reckon he is a very small dealer
and that he is a pharisee as well as a
scribe. Do you think he will write a let
ter for me if I pay him for it ?"
"Certainly he will."
The Yankee thrust his hands into his
pockets almost up to his elbows, and
walked back.
"I say, mister, they say as how you
sell paper and write letters for folks what
can't write. What will ye ax to write a
fetter to my sister Sally ?"
"I shall charge yon five shillings.".
" Will ye write just what I tell ye, and
spell the words right as we do in Ver
mont ?"
"to be sure I will."
" Well, I guess you may write to Sally."
The Londoner procured a pen, ink and
paper, and the Yankee commenced dic
tating after the following style :
"Dear sister Sally."
"'Rived in London last week."
" Have ye got that down
" Yes—go on."
"Thought Ide go into the country and
take a ride."
" Well, the old mare bau'ked."
" She woutdn't go, so I licked her."
" Well, go on."
" Licked her—licked her—licked her."
" Well, go on:'
" Licked her—licked her—licked her—
licked her."
" What is the use of saying that so
many times?"
"Nonen of your business. I pay you
five shillings—licked her—licked her—
licked her."
"This page is full of licked hers."
"Turn over then ; licked her, licked
her, licked her, lick.tl her, licked her.
She wouldn't go then, so I got out and
kicked her, kicked her, kicked her."
" You are not intending to say that as
many times as you said licked her."
"None of your business, I pay you;
kicked her, kicked her, kicked her. She
wouldn't go then, so 1 sharpened the end
of the whip handle, and I pricked her,
pricked her, pricked her."
"I mnnot see any sense in all this."
" Never mind, I pay von ; licked her,
kicked her, pricked her, ticked her, kick.

She wouldn't go then. so I got out and

defiance to orthography.)
"I cannot spell that."
"0, ye can't spell that, ha? Wal, ye
needn't write any more for mc."

" No more," said the Yankee.
"Not a word to close with ?''
"Nary a word."
" You will pay me for what I have
written ?"
"Not a red. You did not write down
all I told you to."
"Well, sir, what am I to do with all
this paper I have spoiled ?"

Hon. Erastus Corning is chiefly known
to fame as an intelligent and successlul
merchant, who has amassed a princely
fortune, amounting to many millions—
how many we know not, but enough to
place him in the front rank of the rich
men of the laud. He has served in the
legislatrxre of New York, and in Congress.
where he rendered effective service as a
practical legislator, and in the committee
mom his sagacity was almost unerring and
kis judgment profound and always to be
depended upon. He is quiet and rather
reserved in manner. reticent and dignified
in conversation, but with a keen sense of
the ludicons, and a felicitous epigrammatic
force of expression wonderfully telling.
Of the latter characteristic we remember
a case in point, to wit: Daring the late
civil war, while Mr. Fenton was Governor
of the State, Generals Sheridan and Sick
les visited Albany, and there was a public
eelebaation in honor of the event, one of
the conspicuous features of which was a
procession in which the to .al militia
participated. Mr. Corning took no part
m the proceedings. but sat quietly in his
store beholding the spectacle. As the
procession passed by he noticed that Fen
ton rode in a carriage with Sheridan. and
Ira Harris with Dan Sickles. Turning to
a gentleman who sat near him, Mr. Corn
ing remarked: "There goes Sheridan
with a man who was never tried for steal
ing, and Harris with another who was
not hung for murdet."

so rapidly that, at the rate, it will take
only a very short time to reduce them to
the condition of the bald-headed prophet
whom the wicked children moc - ked.

ly demanding something in the way of a
preservative or restorative, and hair
nostrnms of all kinds flourish.
Really, however. the only remedy is to
eat off the - hair and wear it short—wash
ing, drying, and brushing thorott,ghly
every day. If that treatment does not
restore the hair, nothing else will. Many
voting ladies huve decided to cut their
hair short, for one season at least.

RUFFS AND REGULATIONS.
The Plowing Match will be held on Fowler
Peck's farm near Harfoni village on Wedensday
Oct. rith. 1870. The entry fee will be one &l
iar ($1,00). Exhibitors wishing to compete for
Premiums arc requested to have their Animals
and Articles entered on the Seery's Books on
the first day of the Fair if (possible) they must
be entered and on the grounds at ten o'clock of
the second day. No Animal can complete for
two premiums. Superintendents of the several
departments will have all articles systematically
arranged. The Officers and Superintendents
will lre known by their official badges. A suf
ficient police force will be in attendance from
o'clock of the first day, until after the reading
or the premiums the second day, to protect the
property of the Exhibitors. No provision will
be made for stalling stock over two years old.
Persons exhibiting full Blood Stock for pre`
mints must show their pedigree to the satisfac
tion of the Judges.
Judges reporting to the Secy's office before
I I o'clock will be furnished a free ticket for din
ner.
