Destructive Fire is the Mountains.

Extensive fires have been burning in the moun

burning. It is ttimated that in cash of their

saving any of it. Great fears are entertained
that the numerous contiguous mills will be
readied by the fire and destroyed. It the flumes
are not stayed before they reach the mills the
whole town of White Haven will be placed in
jeopardy. There. has been no rain in this

Important Decision.
' A question of considerable importance was
lately decided by Judge Chapman, on a case in
Montgomery county. It was whether the town
council of the borough of Pottstown had au
thority under their charter to make a valuation
of taxable property in said borough, with a view
to taxation for borough purposes, irrespective of
valuation placed on such property by the asses
curs for Stale purposm The case was decided
ed negatively by Judge Chapman, in an able and
extended opinion, in which the ground is taken
that the regulneastiossor chosen by the people
for that special purpose, has alone the right to
u..wcss property fur city and borough, as well as
State and county purposes.
