The last night of the old year ! The holiday's
are over, and the usual round of New Teat's
calls have been wade, and New Years saluta
tions exchanged. •
What changes have taken place In one short
year—a period of twelve months
The great men of the nation have been dimin
ished by death ; the Scientific. world has been
startled by new revelatioifs ; great physical
changes have taken place, and the religious
world has loaned a closer bond of union. While
science and religion have Stalked hand iu band
with the improvement of the nations, crime has
held high carnival. The. nation has been bless
ed with health, and the rear has btxm one of us
ual prosperity, and now as we are entering upon
a new year, wt , may hope that our' course will
continue, by god's blessing, upward and on-
ward.
The weather is very warm and ph.asant—in
fact, springlike. The " oldest inhabitant" says
that . he never knew suet. a...v.P.aatni. -It has been
tavorable . for the poor, and we have been enm.
bled to supply the starring of Southern posts
with plenty of MO, for up to the present time
from the last of November, Pittsburgh ha,
shipped over 12,006.1t00 of bushels of coal to the
cities on the lower. Mississippi
Business 6 quiet here, and principally eonlin
ed to the toy and confectionary establishments,
and these have doue but little compared with
former years. Most of our large manufacturing
&int-ems are doing but little, ,tirs.-ely "enough to
give their hands employment. We are hoping.
however, for better times when Spring opens.
The public schools will open next week and
the boys and girls once more will return from
their holiday season of festivity to their hooks
and studies. Our public schools are far behind
those of other cities in paint of excellence. Our
private schools, however, 'cannot be excelled In
! any city west of New York. We have twenty
two in this city and our After city Allegheny, at
the head of which stunts (1w Pittsburgh Female
College, established twenty years ago, and
' which is now almost a University among female
seminaries. lice. Dr. Pectshing, the Principal, Ls
assistc,l by a corps of of 53 excellent and thoro'
female teachers. The cotirse of study is rery
comprehensive, embracinir all the branehta,hoth
English t and chnksiral, that . are taught in most
colleges The litcrag, music, and tine arts de
partments are specialties, and the instruction of
these branchett are the hest that can he had in
' the Union. The College , building,. are eleg„aut
. and spacious, every rooin being carpeted and
furnished The loeation is healthy and
pleasant, end sufficiently: retired to be suitable
for study, although centid enough for all prac
tical purposes. The number of pupil: in mien
. dance for the year Ls about ZOO, embracing
young ladies frau the print lied States in the
Union. While the faculty are of the highest or
der, the terms are less than one third of the an
nual =omit charged by many schools which
Lave fewer teachers and lei., farilitiM. Such is
the popularity of the Pittsburgh Female Cullrge
that all parents whowish to send their daught
ers to this excellent school, are obliged to apply
promptly at the end of each term to secure ad
mission.
Amusements arc quite lively. and the theatres
and ballrooms are w ell patronized In the giddy
and thonghtb,s.
The lecture sk•ason has been quite sucemtfuL
Bayard Taylor lectured a feu clays since before
a very large and apprecialiqr audience. Nis,
Kale Field gave us a ple.s,ant evening talk
about the .liliroudacks. Saxe was here a chord
time since with a hutimrons lecture ou Paris
and the Pari, ians. Twain has been here with
his Ilaitiau Reminiscences. DuClutillu with his
African Gorilla, and next week we are to have
the Ibidical .I.nna Dickinson, with her new lec
ture, " Spunk." Gough will he here in a few
weeks, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton with her

literary point, ritkintrg ii blessed this season.
