Prohibitory Lass.
We publish the $BOO license law for La
zerne county, in this „paper. By its terms
it applies to "merchants and their travel
ling agents," who take orders for goods.
Attempts are being made to drive out far
mers and others who go there to sell pro
duce ; but it is hardly peesible that any
court will place such a construction upon
it. Three things are, however, certain :
'The act is a piece of infamy; it is the po
litical grave of the Senator or Members
who fathered it ; and an outraged public
sentiment will see that men are sent to
Harrisburg next winter who will attend
to its repeal.
Frightful Casualty.
On Sunday night last the house or
" shanty" of Mr. Michael Laughlin, just
above he Susquehanna Valley House, in
this place, was burned to the ground,
about 10i - o'clock, and two children of
Mr. Laughlin, and a young girl named
McNeil, aged fifteen or sixteen, perished
in the flames. A third child of Mr. Laugh
lin was taken from the burning building,
but was so badly injured that be lived on
ly until the following morning. The par
ticulars of this sad affair, which we gain
from good authority, are as follows : The
parents Tent away from home in the ear
ly part of the evening to attend a dance,
and left the young McNeil girl in charge
of the house. It is supposed that when
they Ci ent to bed they left a fire burning
in the stove, from which the building
caught. The remains were taken from
the ruins early Monday morning; and
wereearried to Susquehanna .the same
day. We understand that 'the bellies
were all charred to a great degree, arms
and legs being burnt to cinders.—*Preat

some three summers old, and his wife,

mother departed this life. Less than two
years since he followed his oldest daught

the blooming maiden, who was known on

Steam means power, energy, life, activity, and throws

We propose to show that business can•be done on

TIME OFFICIAL MEMORY
OF THE WAR.
Its Causes, Character, Conduct,
and Results.
Ely Hon. ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS.
A Book for all sections and all partite.
This great work presents the only complete end im
partial analysis of the causes of the war yet published,
and Aires those interior lights and shadows of the great
conflict only known to those high officers who watch
ed the flood tide of renlation from its fountain springs
and which were so acclasible to Mr. Stephens from his
position as second officer of the Confederacy.
To a public that has been snrfelted with apparently
similar productions, we promise a change of Aire, both
agreeable and salutary, and an iniellectnal treat of the
highest order. The Great Ameemn War has at last
found a historian worthy of its importance, and at
whose bands it will receive that moderate, candid and
impartial treatment which truth and justice so urgent
ly demand.
The intense desire everywhere manifested to obtain
this work, its official character and ready sale, combined
with an increased commission, make it the best sub
scription book ever published.
