Apolacon, Little Meadows, Choco
nut, Silver Lake and Franklin, is now
nearly completed ; but a few returns are
yet to he received.
In addition to the Special Taxes (for
merly called licenses) upon occupations,
the annual taxes are those upon incomes
for 1867, and upon carriages, gold or gilt
watches, plate of gold, and plate of silvet,
kept for use, and owned or in possession
on the ht of March, 1868.
Those who have made returns showing
their liability to income tax are as here
under—the amount taxable being the ex
cess over $l,OOO. In making returns, the
income of the wife and minor chi:dren is

ed by the first section of the act of March
2, 1867, is is made the duty of any per•
son liable to annual tax, on or before
the first day of March in each year, to
make a return to the assistant assessor of
the district wherein he resides, of his in
come, and of the articles in schedule A
(gold watches, etc.) owned or kept by him
un the ISt day of March.
Every person failing to make return by
the day specified (March Ist), will be lia•
ble to be assessed by the assistant assess
or according to the best information he
can obtain ; and in such case the assistant
assessor will add fifty per cent. to the
amount of the tar, and from the valuation
and entr.neration so' made there can be no
appeal.
Lc ca , te any person shall deliver to an
assessor any false yr fraudulent list or
statement, the assistant assessor will add
one hundred per cent.. to the tax; (and
there are further penalties not here
named.)
The assessment list be retained a
short time for completion and correction;
and those having taxable incomes
watches, etc., will do well to report with
out delay,.
Assessments with the penalties will be
entered when the list is made up ; after
which a full list will doubtless be pub
hshed.
