    -‘ Negro-. Juror.
The following scene actually occurred
in one of the North Carolina courts IT
candy .
Scene, a Superior Court in session in
North Carolma, Dramatis Personae. Ne
gro on the jury, and counsel objecting to
his competency.
Causidious (log.)—Sam, are .you a free
hoider?
Tim buotoo—" Yes, sar."
" Have yon any land P"
" Nn, sar."
" What do you mean, then, by saying
you are a freeholder ?"
I means bein' free and holdin' on and
all d at."
" What is a verdict, Sam 1 1 "
" I dun It.iow, sar."
What is a defendant ?"
",I dun know, ear; I'se green about
dese tinge."
Counsel— : I submit to your honor
that this negro is utterly incompetent.
dodge— : Let General Canby's jury
order be read.
It is read, and so positively qualifies the
negro in question, and all others like him
in North Carolina, that the poor Judge,
who would he pricked from his bench by
the barnet did he do otherwise, is forced
to decide fur the competency and Tim
lynctoo, with his mouth wide open, is
sworn in, And this gentle repler, is the
way they do the jury business in the
States of North and South Carolina, Geor
gia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Ar
kansas and Texas. Judge Aldrich resi
ded in South Carolina, and off went his
head. Judge Reese resisted in Georgia,
and they trolled him down like a nine pin.
Judge Ward resisted in Alabama, and not
only lost his seat but came near being
laid by the heels to boot. The Mississip
pi Supreme Court resisted, and to day its
Chief Just ice and his two brethren are in
another State earning their bread in their
old age at the bar. Even the judiciary,
you see, must bend. And even the Su
preme Court of the 'United States must
be reconstructed.
Rewarding a Murderer.
Wm. J. Ovens, a miserable, drunken
rowdy rumseller of Philadelphia, shot and
killed Col. William Riddle some months
since. We saw nothing in the affair at
the time it occurred to indicate that it
was anything else than unprovoked and
unmitigated murder. He is now on trial
for his crime in Philadelphia, but the
most remarkable thing is that be was cho
sen as an officer in the Legislature by the
Ropab!ican majority, and now holds that
resit ion. At the time he shot Colonel
Riddle he also held the office of assessor
for one of the Wards of Philadelphia, and
his victim had gone to him in a peaceable
mannsr to see about a matter of business.
The men who elected him to fill an offi
eial position in the Legislature knew all
about his former character and conduct,
and they supported him with open eyes.
What a commentary this is on the " God
and morality party;" even murder seems
not to discinally a man for holding office
in it, but. rather to entitle him toa re ward.
The Old Elan.
Bow low the head, boy, to reverence
the old man. Once like you, the vicissi
tndes of life have silvered the hair, and
changed the round merry face to the worn
visage before you. Once the heart beat
with acperatien co-equal to any that you
have felt ; asperation crushed by disap
p" intMents as yours are perhaps destined
to be. Once that form stalked proudly
ATiongh the gay scenes of pleasure, the
bean ideal of grace ; now the hand of time,
that whithers the flowers of yesterday, has
warped that figure and destroyed the no
ble carriage. Once tt your age 'be pos
sesged the thousand's Lbw:tilts that press
your brain, now wishing to accomplish
deeds equal to a book in fame ; anon im
agining life a dream, that the sooner he
awoke from it the bettor. But he has liv
ed the dream very near though. The time
to awaken is very near at hand ; yet his
eye ever kindles .at bold deeds of daring,
and the hand takes a firmer grasp of the
still. Bow low the head, boy, as you
wou:d, in your old age, be reverencee.—
T cum 1 :
A Srtrivizy WIFE.—A middle aged far
mer and his wife were enjoying a winter
evening closely tog, eatber when the con
versation turned upon religous matters,
as discribed in the Bible, which the man
had opean before him.
" Wife," said the farmer. " I've been
thinking what happy society Solomon
must have had in his day, with so many
wives, &e., as is here represented."
" Indeed," said the wife, somewhat
miffed. " You had better think of some
thing else, than. A pretty Solomon you
would make, truly; you can't take proper
care of your wife. What a figure you
would cut, then, with a dozen wives, and
all of them as spunky as I am !"
The farmer took his hat and went to
the stable to feed the cattle for the night.
—On a recent occasion Bradley a ne•
gro delegate in the Georgia Convention,
declared " if the people dared to refuse to
ratify the proceedings of the Convention,
the burning of Atlanta and the march of
Sherman through Gerogia would be but
a foretaste of what his race and the Uni
ted States Army would do to Georgia."
A nu, RADICAL TEA3L—The radical
State ticket of Louisiana has a white man
for Governor, a negro:for Lieut. Gover
noi, and a negro Ittr State Treasurer.
—One of the tanista ,of the Mississippi
menagerie proposed, ou the 31st, that no
reporter to be admited who makes "color"
distinction in reporting proceevings.
—The Anti-Slavery Standard, tbe Inde
pendent and the Revolution--all Radical
orgatak—lailite in charging Gen. Grant
with habitual armament. ‘- • ••••:
