Broke Jail.
On Tuesday evening last, Fred. Austin
and George Shippy escaped fron% the
Montrose jail. A pair of horses were
stolen from Milton Griffis in West Bridge
water that night, but were found next
day by S. D. Terrell, in Franklin. The
horses had evidently been ridden bard
and then left. It is reported that the
men were seen near the Allard school.
house, in the morning, travelling west
ward ; and we alsohear that Shippy was
seen below Springville some days later.
The sheriff offers $5O reward for the
arrest of each of them.
Austin is about 28 years olil; 5 feet 7
inches high, thin in flesh, dark complexion,
large hazel eyes, and dark beard—wore
dark clothes-is a gentleman in appear
ance, and reserved in conversation. Ship
py is about 21 years of age, 5 ft. 0 inches
high, well proportioneci, light, complexion,
wore grayish clothes, and looks like a
hard case.
Sudden Bereavement.
Almost upon the landing of Ho, Geo.
W. Woodward from the vessel which had
conveyed him to the shores of his native
land, thetele!rraph bore to him the mour-n
-ful message that death had been busy 'in
his family circ'e during his absfnce. His
sin William, wh . o had'heen ill for some
three or four weeks, died in Wi.ks-lierre
on Monday 14th. A sad greeting indeed.
Mr. Woodward was about 24 yqrs of

GUI Concern.
A T. Williams A,- Co., Philadelphia,
send as an advertisement of a gift con
cert; but our advice to the public is to
invest no money in any sncb schemes, and
the offer to accept Money for laying a
humbug before our readers is rejected, as
umal. We shall regret to see any news
paper publish such an advertisement.
Not Personal.
- A Berson, upon learning a friend had
started a paper, at once subscribed for it.
The publisher was rather delicate about
sendir.g, the bill—hut after some ten years
had elapsed, made bold to dun ins "con
stant reader," when the latter at dace
grew indignant, refused to pad•, and or
dered the paper stopped, alleging that
"he had taken the paper for so many
years just to keep it along, and now to be
asked to pig' tbr it was too mean."
N. B. If wo have any such friends, let
us hear from them at November court,
without a bill being sent.
P. S. Friends of the other sort need
not hold back.
Truth and Poetry.
" MELANCHOLY Dens. " —Bryaut, "oar
sweetest poet of nature," as an ardent ad
mirer styles him, sings of this"season—
" The inffilancholy days bate come,
The saddest of the year."
Bryant must have
-meant the Black Re
publicans. If so, be was both a poet and
a prophet. For to that party, hoW truly,
" the melancholy days have- come," and
surely, they aro " the saddest of the year;"
bat as for Democrats, the lovely weather
of the past few weeks has been so ; much
in accord with the other occurrences, from
Maine' to California, that, to them, Brv

ant's lines have no significance.
