A Western paper tells a story of a dis
tressed agriculturist thus :
A.-farmer dropped* in here on Wednes
day last to pay his rent, putting on a
long face to correspond with the times.—
On entering the house he told the land
lord that times were so bad that he could
not raise the money at all ; and, dashing
a bundle of greenbacks on the table, said,
"'There, that is all I can pay." The mo
ney. was taken up and counted by Mr. —,
the landlord, who said .7 "Why, this is
twice as. much as you owe." " Dang'ee
give it to me again," said the farmer,
" I'm dashed , if I hain't taken it out of
the wrong pocket !"

It is rather norgl 'doctrine that because
one man happens to livo in another man's
house (and pays his rent,) he ,itr‘Ander ob

Impudence could not well go farther. It
is very evident that the gentleman who,

ordered, has neyer troubled the free

In the Wrong Room.
A gentleman of Wheeling, whose lady
was suffering from a cold, got up at mid
night and went below to fetch a mustard
poultice. In his agitation he mistook the
room on his return, and went into one
where there was a light burning as dinily
as that he left,- a room altogether similar,
and apparently his wife in bed fast asleep.
He applied the mustard poultice to her
chest, and sat quietly at her bedside till
it began to draw. It did draw, but it
drew an infuriated scream from the young
lady who had been the subject of his un
conscious solicitude. At the sound of the
unaccustomed voice, the nature of the IP
cident which had befallen him and Ithr e i
