-pagatity of the Otii:
A gentleman of the name of M'Lafin,
residing in Rockingham county, N. H., a
few year a possessed a dog that was
verv'rirriti bile Sagacity: He
one day tc.l the dog to go and find a
handkerchief which his child had lost in a
distant field while picking berries. The
dog . started.off with his usual alacrity,
but in the course of an hour or two he re
turned without the handkerchief, looking
iiireitfallen thatigli he' . had
caught in a neighbor's sheepfold. The
master cuffed his ears sharply, and told
him to.go sad try main, and not come
back fiDurWit. The'dOt star
ted off again with apparent reluctance,
while the master followed at a distance
behind and nnpereeiVed. The dog went
towards the &hi where the child had
picked :he berries, and sat down on his
hauncbes, held tiown his - bead,'aud ap•
peared to be in a deep, brown study.
He sat in this attitude for perhaps half
an hour, when he suddenlyjumped up
with a peculiar yell of exultation, and
started for one corner of the field. Here
he stopped for a moment, and then corn
menced
trotting around the field, going
about three feet from the fence the first
time, about six feet the second, and thus
ISObtintiing to near the middle at eac'l
succeeding circle. He went around the
field about twenty times, when he jump
ed up into the air with a loud yell of tri
umph, picked up the handkerchief, and
started for home.
The veracity of this narrative may be
relied upon. We received it from Mr.
F—, a Baptist clergyman of great re
spectability. Now, did the dog reason
mathematically ? Does this ,go to add
proof that instinct is but another name
fir reason P—Family Visitor.
—A young woman of 18, who present

hasYeoebily died in New York. Her head
was thirty-seven inches in circumference,
and tWititrieven over the vertex, from
one ear to the other; while her body was
little more than a skeleton. Her mother
bad steadfastly refused the most tempting
offers of money, Mr. Barnum offering
825,000, to have her afflicted child exhib
ited to the public, and now refuses, on
any terms, to have the remains preserved
in the interest of science.
A Rtacit ENDORSEMENT.—A convect
tion of negroes of New York assembled
at Albany on Wednesday to discuss the
proper policy to-. . be pursued by them in
the present canvass in that State. The
nomination Alf Fenton, Republican candi
date for--Governor, was endorsed, and the
eight" thousand negro voters of the State
were urged to support the ticket.

inquired a barber who was shavings gen•
