ished structure, and the Stateas its scaf
folding. I think the Church came perfect
from the hand of its Divine Architect—
built upon a rook, established, finished,
complete—and every one who comes into
it by the right door' will find a mansion
prepared for him. Ile needs no scaffold.
Its founder refused all connection with
human governments for scaffolding or
any other purpose.
You say (in substance) that, without
sometimes taking political subjects a min
ister is in''clatiger of faith* into a. q'ilainti
indefinite, and non-committal style," that
will do no good and bring him no respect.
The Gospel is , r4ol ano,' indefinite, or
non-committal upon the subjects of which
it takes jurisdiction, and upon them you
may reaciir aft ioudiy i -aalott please: >—
Beta admit" that Si - tided of great pit
lio excitement—an important election or
a eisibaret. r men liaten,uppatient4y to the
teachings `orfaith and repentatee. A ser
mon which tells them to do justice, love
mercy and-walk ktmbly before ,God, is
not an-enteitiiiiinient - to which they will
ingly invite themselves. At such a time,
a clergyman .eari vastly increaae per
sonal-dont:mil/Mice atid. win:golden opin
ions from his audience, by pampering
their passions with a highly seasoned dis
course on politics. The temptation to
gratify them often becomes too strong
for the virtue of the preacher. I fear that
yourself are yielding; to it. As a mere
layman I have no right to advise a Doctor
of Divinity, but I hope I am not over pre
sumptious when I warn you against this
specious allurement of Satan. All thoughts
of putting the Gospel aside because it
does not suit the depraved tastes of the
day, and making political harangues to
win popularity in a. bad, world, should be
sternly trampled down as the suggestion
of the Evil One, " who was a liar and a
murderer from the beginning."
Faithfully, yours,
J. S. BLACK.
York, Pa., July 25, 1866.
tEr• A " Freedwoman" who had been
condemned by Col. Bailey to work on
the streets, told him very significantly,
" Dat dis freedom was a good deal like
Confederate money, de more you has ob
it, do wosse you is off."
A gentleman in New Haven has been
engaged in an interesting enterprise. He
has caught in his garden, with twenty
tour wide mouthed bottles, partially filled
with molasses and vineg ar, three bushels
of flies, bugs, millers, 4:Foc. The bottles
were hung upon his garden fence. Du
ring the first seven days the amount of
flies, ac., caught was forty-two solid
quarts.
